Sarah,

Hello I am new to the forum just signed up today! I was wondering if you ever play one pocket or any other games besides 9ball to help you play better?

Thanks
Luke

Hi Luke,

Welcome to the forum and thank you for your question. At this point in time I don't play any one pocket. I have played the game but I have no idea what is going on. I get frustrated because I make mistakes. I am trying to find someone to teach me the game. It will benefit my 9ball game and possibly my $$ situation. :)

Other than 9ball, I like playing straight pool. For some reason it is nerve racking yet relaxing. (does that make any sense?) When I learned to play the game properly it greatly benefitted my 9ball game.

I used to play alot of snooker. That didn't help my 9ball game so much, but it did help my mental game. You have to concentrate so hard playing that game, especially on a 12ft table.

What games do you play and how long have you been playing?

Take care,
Sarah

Sarah,

Thanks for responding so quickly!! I have been playing for 3 years use to just play 8ball then friend got me to play 9ball. I work the night shift now so I can play all day long now which is pretty cool. I usually play one pocket with the old guys in the pool room. They use to kill me but now I am getting them! My 9ball game I think has improved alot since playing one pocket I am more patient with 9ball instead of trying to force a shot I will play a safe unless of course I am playing a ring game. Hey if you are ever in Northern Va dc area come and play some one pocket with us!!

Sarah, If you ever get the chance to spend a day or more with Grady Mathews, I highly recommend him. After one 3 hour session with him, my knowledge of one pocket improved a couple of balls. No joke. My execution of the shots was there, He just helped me to see more of the big picture. Good Luck

Luke,

You definitely have the pool bug! You are lucky to get to play everyday, all day. It is definitely a good thing to try to become an all around player. The older guys at the pool room are probably good teachers. They definitely can teach you patience. Thank you for the invitation. I will let you know if I am ever in the area.

Sliprock,
I hope to get that opportunity. Grady has so much knowledge in every game. I live so far away though. Thanks for the suggestion...I will keep it in mind.

Luke,

Just curious as to where you play at in the NoVA/DC area. I live in that area. Have you ever competed in any of the Planet Pool events?

Also I forgot to add that I play at champions in laurel sometimes and different halls around the area! trying to get my time in!!!

Luke,

You are lucky, the area you live in has alot of nice pool rooms. I have been to a few of the Champions and one of the Fast Eddies chains. I spent alot of time out that way about 3 years ago when I was trying to qualify for the pro tour.

And yes...the guys may take forever to shoot, but generally they shoot the right shots, make the right moves, rather than going for crazy, aggressive shots.

Take care,
Sarah

Yeah, I just started doing the PP thing this year, just the 8 ball though. I'm not a great 9 ball shot so I figure I will see how I do competing in a game that I am decent at. If I fair well then I will proceed to the 9 ball tourneys. It sucks about your work schedule. I'm going to my second event in the morning; the first one was fun time. If you ever get the chance you should do it.

Landshark,

I really want to play in them!! I think I may take a friday and sat off so I can attend them I have been seriously thinking about going to the one in april at champions in rockville I believe! But we will see!!

Sarah,

Yeah they do tend to take the right shots and usually leave me in a jam!! But thats how you learn. I remember when I first started playing and I played in ring games nothing much just like $1 on the 5 and $2 on the 9 I would get hooked every shot it seemed and I lost quite a bit on those games! But I can kick a ball any where on the table I may not make it but I will not give ball in hand!! So I guess I paid for those!! HAHA!! Damn Lessons!!

You 2 should stay up all night like I have too!!
Luke

Luke, it definitely sounds like you are going about things the right way to learn. The ring games will help with your aggressiveness and your kicking. It just gets frustrating when kicking is all you get to do.

The one pocket...I wish I had the patience to play the game. I lose it after about 4 games. Right now in my area no one plays the game. It's hard to learn when no one plays.

By the way...I generally do stay up all night...side effect of pool.

Sarah

AFTER 4 GAMES!!! That is patient I used to be impatient after the 4th shot and just break open the rack!! We (thats me and the old timers) were playing partners the other day and one game took 50 mins!!! It was unreal!!! we finally won!! I just wanted to start pulling my hair out that game!!! But then I took a drink of tea and relaxed and we played another game!!! Its fun!! Hey how old are you if you dont mind me asking and is land shark your real sister? Also do you do lessons or shows. I know there is another word for shows but I cant think of it! How many hours do you practice and then how many do you play for money or in tournaments you know just around the pool hall. Is there any drills you can give me to do if you want you can email them to me! Thanks again!! YOU ROCK!!!
Luke

Yes Luke, 4 games...sometimes more, sometimes less. I get more frustrated rather than bored. I hate being bad at the game. At least you know how to settle yourself down and finish the game. Either that or you have someone who does a good job waking you up when it's your shot.

How dare you ask my age!! Ok, so honestly that question should never bother anyone....I'm 22. How old are you? And no...Landshark isn't my real sister...she uses the word "sista" to describe her relationship with me...meaning...friends, close like sisters...I hear it is a ghetto word. She may have made it up herself. :) I do give lessons...mostly to kids and beginners. I think the word you are looking for is exhibitions. I do those as well when I am contacted about doing them. I try to do alot of charity events that involve challenge games and some trick shots. My practice schedule varies. Somedays I practice alot and other days not at all. It just depends on how I'm feeling and whats going on at the pool room. I play in tournaments as often as I can and I do gamble. I'm almost always looking for a game. And last but not least...I live in central IL.

If I can find any drills I will let you know. There have been some threads on the main forum that give links to websites that offer drills.

Sarah

Thanks Sarah!!
I have found some drills on the net but wanted to know if you did any particular ones. I am 28 yes I know I am almost over the hill!! I saw your pick on here and WPBA and thought you were young, but just wanted to check. So what kind of spot you going to give me!! I will take the 4 and out and of course the breaks!! 1pocket you have to give me 12-6 and the breaks!! we can play for like $1000 a game make sure to bring your backer! I will have mine! which of course is my ATM card!! haha!! Well the tea helps but I get bored sometimes cause its not like we are playing for tons of money usually just 5 or 10 a man. When I play for more then that I dont get bored I get very very interested in the game and get frustrated at a blown shot or a bad safe but I guess everyone does! But what I do to get the old timers mad is go to the juke box and play some slipnot or other hard rock songs!!! That usually gets them mad!! Plus it pumps me up and I can play a mean air guitar!! Thats how I get back at them for taking so damn long to shoot!! haha.. Nick Varner came here about a year ago a local pro is really good friends with him, and got him to come it was before his surgery. I played him I should have broke and run but I hung the 7ball (damn 7ball!!) and of course he can make 3 balls !! But it was fun everyone like it so I thought I would ask if you did them (exhibitions).

Luke...just when we were getting to be friends you go and ask for that much weight!! Come on now....I'm just a girl. ;) By the way...thanks for not trying to guess my age. Alot of people do that and they usually guess anywhere between 15 and 20. You certainly have interesting ways of distracting the older guys...better hope they don't come in with ear plugs...your tactics won't work. Nick Varner is a great guy. I learned alot by just talking to him when he visited my area. I can understand why everyone there enjoyed his company.
