Yesterday just wasn't my day. Being down 1-4 at snooker my son and i switched to playing pool and i was well and truly hammered. At 0-9 and having the worst luck imaginable I said " one more and i'm going home". Smiling like a cheshire cat the bugger clears up and leaves me watching him pot the black when i've still got all seven reds on the table.

"Wait till nan hears about this" he said.

Thing is virtually every week she'll ask him how we got on and praises him up when he wins and takes the mick out of me. But he's never in 20 years bettered me by such a margin. Hell she'll be giving him all the trifle when we go round and offer me a piece of dripping or worse. Cant have this i thought, theres only one thing for it.

"One last frame for a fiver ?" I challenged.

All or nothing i thought, 11-0 is no worse than 10-0 but if i won the fiver at least i could laugh it off and say i hustled him.

Then it dawned on me, how he had thrashed me so easily. At pool i've always beaten him without really trying but a couple of months back he joined his local pub league team and they play the old rules which we had played yesterday, on the odd occasion we have played in the past we have gone with the world rules. Now his game has improved quite a lot but he's still playing a potting world rules type of game as was I.

For those that dont know..
World rules: as USA 8 ball. UK old rules: No need for a ball to hit a rail every time ones not potted.

All i had to do was change my mindset, forget who i was playing and play as I did years ago when playing the old rules and play for snookers.

Covered the two top pockets with my first visit, got 3 reds bunched together at the top of the table with my second and left him snookered behing them.(far easier to do when no ball has to hit the rail). From then on it was so very very easy he had no chance.

Let him off with the fiver as long as he tells his nan no more than "oh i won"

Should have made the bet a tenner and have him say he lost :D
