schon r6

I just found an old stitched ring r6 and it came in the mail yesterday. I wasn't sure what to expect as I bought it off of craigslist in Wisconsin and I am in Oregon. It came with two brown phenolic ringed shafts, which are from 1980 I believe, and an old soft schon case. The shaft with a tip on it had a cracked ivory ferrule, but I wanted to rey it out anyway. Man do these old schons feel perfect. The tip is ancient and around 11.6mm, but it plays really stiff. I found my new love. I now understand the difference between old and new schons, as I have both. This actually feels better than my Runde. I am curious as to how these compare to customs from the 60's and 70's. If you can find one of these cues, I doubt if you will ever let them go.

I bought an R6 before with 13.2mm tips with yellow micarta ferrules. Although the hit was nice, the cue had the most squirt I have ever witnessed. After a few weeks of trying I decided I just could not get the hang of it using english. I decided to sell it. I now regret not keeping the butt and just selling the shafts or having them turned down, because it was a sweet cue. Oh well.

Good find...

Nice find, now you know why Runde Schon's are better by feeling it your self.
It's too bad that Bob decided to sell his part of the business back to the other partners. They were more interested in selling more cues once Schon developed such a good reputation.

So I've been playing with this Schon since I bought it. I hate to say it, but nine times out of ten, the Runde stays in its case. Yesterday I received and original stitched rings shaft with a yellow micarta ferrule in the mail and ran down to the pool hall. The shaft is amazing. I have using two earlier Schon shafts from 1981, both have short uncapped ivory ferrules and are 11.5 and 11.75. Those shafts hit a little harder, I think due to the ferrules being short and uncapped. The new shaft is 12.85 but puts a lot of stank on the ball. I'm in love with this cue all over again. This cue is now around 20.5oz with the new shaft, 4.4oz, which is heavier than I normally play with by an ounce, but it feels so good. It sure as hell moves the ball and maybe its me, but I was making more off angle banks, Z banks and thin cuts alot easier. Its probably in my head, but I'll go with it. If anyone can pickup an old Schon as a player, they will be more than happy. Happy holidays to all.
