I purchased this R9 with a brown leather wrap and two original micarta shafts. The wrap was in perfect condition, but, it wasn't for me. The micarta ferrules were cut down to about 3/4" from many, many tip changes.

I took the cue to my local cue repair guy and asked for an ivory ferrule to be installed along with a nice wrap as would have been factory installed.

In the mean time, I had/have this cue for sale and got an offer that I felt was a little low. This was due in part because the interested party thought that the wrap was an upgrade and the ivory ferrule was a down grade.

This got me wonering, so, here are a few before and after pictures for you to decide if the addition of the ivory and new wrap help or hurt the value of this cue.

Im not really sure what you are asking.......if he offered to little than its to little. Looks like an attempt to restore the cue to a better condition which I personally would be happy about. I dont know jack about cues and values as far as how they reflect off of age and restorations, but like I said if you feel it was a low-ball offer ( which it prolly was) then I would keep looking. Nice cue though. GL

Thanks for the reply!

I am looking for opinions about the new wrap vs the old wrap and the ivory ferrule vs the original ferrule.

Do the new additions make this cue more or less desireable in your opinion?

The change back to linen and also back to a standard length ferrule with ivory, which I believe was an option from Schon back then.........both solid upgrades imo.

That ugly brown print leather wrap and short cut-down ferrrule kept a lot of people from being interested in that cue before. In fact, I was one of them. :)

One shaft is still original and one is ivory now. The second shaft is 12.3 mm and I did not want to spend the 75 for an additional ivory ferrule for the thinner shaft.

I now am in the process of thinking about a refinish or just selling.

Do you have a price in mind now that it's finished? Is it straight or does it have some issues?

I think the ivory and the wrap are upgrades. I'm not a fan of wraps in general, but I'm somewhat interested in that cue.

IMHO, ferrule is an upgrade and the wrap is a downgrade. Then again, I hate linen wraps.

schon cue

When it comes to the old R series schon I think most people would rather have the Micarta ferrules, Stich rings, and as original as can be. The problem with your cue is the Micarta ferrules have been cut down , Big Big no no. Now my guess is the shafts are a bit shorter unless who ever did the work drilled and put a new longer dowl to make the length correct. My guess is that that most likely was not done. As far as the wrap goes You dont see many R series schon with leather wraps at least I never have, The linen was a good call, Honestly I think most R series fans would not be interested if the shafts are shorter as a result of the new ferrules.

IMO, the ferrule is a definite upgrade. The wrap is pretty subjective, I personally like leather wraps but the one that was on there was, eh, less than attractive? I think you made a good decision!

Since you are asking for opinions, I will basically say what has already been said. Ferrule is a good upgrade, the wrap is also an upgrade for most, but some do not like linen, although that brown "vinyl" pattern was pretty tacky, imo. Again, I am putting my opinion into the mix regarding the wrap.

A new dowl was not needed as the original was still 100%. A new ivory capped ferrule was threaded and installed as normal. The length of the shaft with the ivory is a little longer than 29". The other shaft is still around 28.75" and this ferrule was a little longer than the one I had replaced.

I wanted to go with micarta, good luck finding any from that time period.

This is great information. I hated that wrap because it made the cue too dark and I did not care for the pattern. I have both leather and linen on other cues I own and did not make the choice based on a preferance beteen the two. I made the choice based on what would have been on the cue from Schon.

Here is how the shafts now stack up after the ivory ferrule:
Shaft 1-29 1/8", 12.5mm, 4.2 oz, ivory ferrule
Shaft 2-28.75", 12.3mm, 4.0 oz, original micarta ferrule

The butt is 29", 15.2 oz.

As stated above, the tennon dowl was full length and was used for the install of the new ivory ferrule.

For me,I like everything about it before. Those ferrules ,even short like that would play great and the leather is a awesome wrap.I like it much more
before hand strictly for playability and looks.
I've never liked ivory ferrules unless the shaft was super skinny, just
to much throw.

Thanks for the opinions. It is nice to get a feel for how a cue will be considered by others when taken in a new direction. My goal was/is to get this one back to more of a stock look and feel.

I would have gone with a micarta ferrule if I could have found a nice piece to have installed. That being said, the ivory does hit harder than the micarta with about the same feel.

If anybody is interested in this cue, it is for sale and I have a listing in the wanted/for sale forum now.
