Up for sale is a mid-90's Schuler Original cue, signed by Ray, and featuring figured oak wood for the butt, with a burgandy or wine finish. At first glance, one might think the cue is purpleheart, but I've been told by one of Ray's former workers, that, judged by photographs, the cue appears to be oak. Many cuemakers feel that oak offers as good a hit as any wood known to man, and I would have to agree, given the solid, yet fluent feeling one feels when striking the cue ball. This classic Schuler is in Excellent or EXC-condition, a solid 8.75 to 9-of-10, with a glossy finish, and only one small ding the size of a match head, as well a few superficial, pinhead-sized impressions that can only be seen if you look for them. All-in-all, this is a very presentable cue, with striking wood grain, and offering superb playability.
The first thing you want to see on a Schuler, to confirm that it is an original, is Ray Schuler's signature, signed, "By Ray Schuler," in black marker, and under the finish, as seen here:
Having Ray's signature ensures that the cue was made while he was still alive and supervising and inspecting each cues. After Ray's untimely passing in 2002, Schuler cues were licensed through permission of his widow, and signed, "Ray Schuler, S.L.C."
Here's a collage of pics showing the pristine condition of the linen wrap, the highly figured grain of the oak wood, with its transparent wine finish, and finally, the beautiful mottled ivory ferrule, which helps provide the nice, clean and crisp hit. The shaft of this cue alone, is worth about $265.00, as the ivory ferrule is a $90.00 upgrade for a standard $175.00 Schuler shaft.
Here are a few pics showing the super nice grain and highly figured oak wood, as found in the butt and the forearm:
Here's a shot of both components, the butt and shaft of this mid-90's, original Ray Schuler cue: (Poor lighting doesn't show true beauty, use in joint comparison with the other closeup pics.
Here are the Cue Specs:
BUTT WEIGHT=15.65 oz.
SHAFT WEIGHT=3.75 oz.
TIP = 12.42 mm
If you've never shot with a Schuler original, you owe your pool game a favor. You'll love it! Here's a link to a thread right here on AZB, where Schuler users talk about their cues:
