Schuler vs. Schon

I think my choice now is between the Schuler SC230 and the Schon STL-7. I have seen the Schuler for as low as $517.50 so it is looking like the better buy. I love the joint design and how I can choose between such a wide variety of shaft tapers. I think the American taper would suit my needs quite well. Any input? Thanks.

I have a schuler and think it is a very good production cue. I have one american and one european taper shaft. The american taper is a nice stiff shaft but isn't an extreme taper or anything. Very good for pool. The joint design is good. The workmanship on the cue is very good. The cue is also stiff overall. The hit is a hard, clean hit. I describe it as "bright". It is ugly, and I think schons look better than schulers. (although I get compliments from others on it) But I own a schuler and not a schon. ;)

I got it as a spare cue or travel cue. Something production I could replace if it was stolen. Recently I took it to las vegas and it came in handy. If it got stolen, oh well, that's what insurance is for. Call schuler and get a new one shipped. Played some 3C at the Cue Club with the european shaft. The cue plays a lot better than I do. I don't get to play billiards much where I live, so it was nice having a cue for it.

I would go schuler I think.

Maybe I should sell you mine tho and put the money on a southwest I have been envying tho. :D

Thanks for your reply. I am more interested in buying a new cue, but what model is yours? Do you have any pics?

sent you a PM while you were posting. No pics, but I indicated the model. If you want pics I'll have to learn how to do that and borrow a dig. camera. I am too far behind technologically.

I appreciate your replies. You don't have to provide pics, I can probably find one or two on the net somewhere.

Schuler is fatter, has less deflection and have better feel than Schon imo.
Schon hold their value better imo.

In my experience Schon makes a superior cue in regards to hit, fit and finish. Schuler isn't in the same league as far as I am concerned. Resale on the Schon is also much higher.

R. Bitalis Series

The top three models in the pic are Bitalis series.

Oh how I hate to see wood stained like that. To my way of thinking stain is doing one of two things. Covering for an ugly piece of wood or ruining a beautiful piece of wood.

Yeah, I kind of agree and have one. That's why I said it is kind of ugly. The wood on mine is actually pretty good, nice grain and figuring. It would have been nicer with a different stain or finish. I like a darker stained cue sometimes, but usually when it's a josswest or something. My schuler is the most naturally stained of their cues in kind of a brown color. As I said, I get some compliments on it even though I think it is not very pretty. Maybe people who don't mention it hate it, I dunno. I didn't buy it for looks which is good, because it isn't so great looking. ;)
