Screw Kaoshung

The ref in Chao's match was asked to check Valentine's jump stick length by Chao. He checked the length and the length was found to be legit. It was within the rights of a player to ask the ref to perform a check. Whether or not it was gamesmanship, it may or may not be. But Valentine was beaten with strong play and the the fact that he didn't play well, not because his jump cue stick length was checked. It was within Valentine's rights to ask the ref to perform the same check on Chao if he wished to, but he didn't have the opportunity afterwards.

My sentiments exactly. We shouldn't blame the ref for what Chao did. The commentators were kinda hinting that it was a bit of sharking on Chao's part, but I don't think he needed to anyway.

The referee should have not responded to Chao's request - that was unsporting by Chao!

You must remember these ref's are not used to television and they are put on the spot sometimes but it is all a learning curve - they are not crooked thou, I take exception to that comment on their behalf. They have worked their butts off and I have received no official complaints.

I would like to add that I always hear minor grips about the refs wherever we are - the players are always looking for outs when they get beat and the ref is an easy target!

So has Earl asked you out yet?

Its good to hear from an unbiased source as to accusations of 'crooked' refs or even 'crooked' pockets.
As to the vocal fans, I was playing in a competition on home ground once and there came a crucial point in the match and the away opponent missed and my buddies (the home crowd if you will) cheered and I was glaring at them, they were like what did we do? It happens and the pros more so should be immuned to it.
Anyway it would be a sad day for billiard sport if the Taiwanese players should travel to the US and they get marginalized for some perceived wrongdoing.
Most of them have problems communicating in english so they may appear to be unsociable or unfriendly.

Ladyref, I feel that the referees need to know fluent english when invloved in an international tournament such as WPC, so that incidents where push outs are called but not understood/acknowledged by the ref are few and far between. The Schmidt Chamat incident is the second time this has happened in a tournament in Taiwan, Mika v Yang being another, where the referee disregarded a clear push and gave Yang ball in hand...

Is it really that difficult to find English speaking referees?

Yes, it is difficult to find english speaking refs and why should they? We are in their Country not the other way around...

If the players in question knew the rules, they would know not to accept the foul but call the senior ref for assistance and they didnt - it's their own fault! The refs where going by the letter of the rules rather than using common sense...

Ahh, please accept my apologies, Ms. Tabb. We Americans do tend to think we are the only ones that matter!
(And, Jerry Springer is not exemplary of our country, while I've got your eye)

Thanks for all you do for the pool world!
