Seeding a Tournament

What is your opinion of seeding in a tournament? Should it be used? Is it good for the game? Will you enter a tournament that is seeded if you are not one to be seeded? Jake

I don't like seeded events. The purpose for a seeded event is to ensure the top players are still playing in the final days of the event for the spectators. Gate fees are largest at the end of the event.

If was to spend $500 to get into the US Open, I would like the benefit of a blind draw. I don't like the fact the my entry fee is the same as a top player and I'm put into an unfair advantage because I'm an unranked player.

As a promoter of tournaments, I do not seed my events even though I track Player of the Year points during my series. I won't do it until I get one of those big TV contracts.

I know that Mike Zuglan, the Joss Tour promoter, has the same feelings about seeding an event. That is why he doesn't seed the Joss Tour events.

Mario I tend to agree with you. I can see seeding if there is a nice, lucrative TV deal for the finals because everyone wants the best in the finals. At least the best names in the finals. Because fans want to watch the name players. And the fans bring in the money. And TV is playing to the fans. And it is all about money, money, money! To me seeding just about ensures that that will happen. A stacked deck. A quick look at the brackets for the Orlando Open will show that the pros will not have to face each other until the 4th round. And there were no upsets in the first two rounds. All the pros moved up. the pros had no worry about having to face each other in the early rounds. Such a deal. Jake~~~just proves that there is always another sucker to replace the last sucker. LOL

Seeding the field at the US Open can be acceptable, but to seed the Orlando Open doesn't make sense. The Orlando Open is not a big enough event in my mind to ensure big players at the end. Last year, the US Open had the Pay-per-View which makes for a good argument.
