Shaft/Ferrule question

So, normally I know that when you crack or break a ferrule on a predator shaft you are supposed to send it back to predator for repair. I tried to call them a couple of times for specific instruction on the hows and where?s and never got a call back and only reached voicemail when I called. So I called Robertson?s billiards here in Tampa and took it in to Wayne Bough who does the repairs there.

For anyone who has a Predator Z-Shaft you know that they come with a very small ferrule? Well when I picked it up he had put a much bigger ferrule on it? I noticed something that I have never noticed before and have zero knowledge on? I could see through the ferrule and it was hollow? I had always assumed that the shaft went all the way to the end of the ferrule? Based on the size of the new ferrule vs. the old one the space that was hollow was almost exactly the difference in the length of the new ferrule vs. the old one? so I called Wayne and asked him if this was normal and would it play the same?. He said that it was normal for predator shafts that they had a ?capped? ferrule and the old one also had a hollow spot in it as well... He said that it should play the same. Educate me here, is this normal do all ferrule have a hollow spot in them? When you hold the shaft up to light you can see this?

Maybe post it in the "Ask the Cuemaker" section. Many of the cue makers don't seem to venture very far from there.
 
No its not normal. having a space between the top of the tenon and the inside top of the ferrule will put undue stress on the ferrule a sides of the tenon. Why don't you give me a call here at the factory and we will see what we can do to get your shaft straightened out.

On my Z shaft, the ferrule is much shorter than my McDermott shafts, and it is much much shorter than the ferrule on the OB-1 shaft.

My question is this -

Did Wayne put a normal length ferrule on the Z-Shaft?

If he did, then yes, it would be hollow because it would more than likely be a longer ferrule than the original.

Strange.

If all else fails, get with Fart Sniffer - or one of the other guys at Predator - they can help you get that fixed in a hurry.

Not normal length compared to what was on it.

This sucks. I need that shaft fixed in A1 condition, ASAP. I got Wayne to do it rather than sending it in because I'm supposed to meet with Scott Lee in the next week for a lesson. and I payed almost 40bux to get it done. Damn!!! I did play with it last night to see if I could tell any difference and I couldn't. it hit fine, but I knew this couldnt be right. So this whole capped ferrule thing is BS? there is never supposed to be any space between the end of the cue (tenon) and the top of the ferrule???

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does this space change the playabilty of the shaft???

I really need to know what to do here, does anyone have Darrin's phone number? I'm under a tight time contraint here, Scott is only in Florida for another week and I dont want to waste time/money getting a lesson with a shaft that wont perform at 100%

You already shot with the new ferrule and didn't notice a difference. I don't see this shaft getting to Predator and back to you in time for the lessons. Contact Predator and make arrangements to have it sent to them after the lessons, be sure to explain to them the entire situation.

I broke a ferrule on one of my Predator shafts and decided to send it in because a local guy said he would have to take the ferrule off and insert a tenon into the hollow portion of the shaft to just get another ferrlue put on. The tenon would defeat the purpose of having a Predator shaft.

The ferrule actually extends down into the hollow portion, so what the person who repaired your shaft probably did was just stick a ferrule on the end of your shaft.

I would definately send it to Predator and have it repaired by them. I never had a problem getting in touch with them. Also, if you go to the website you can contact them through the site. When I did this, I got a call back from someone at Peredator the same day.

Your lesson with Scott will not depend on the shaft or ferrule you are using. You could use a house cue and get what you want to out of a lesson from him. The lesson is not based on the cue it is based on the shooter. JMHO.
