shaft insert repair

hello all,

i just bought a schon with two shafts. butt is fine and one shaft is fine. The second shaft has something inside the insert. It looks like a broken off piece of a black plastic joint protector. Its down into the insert about a half inch or so. I haven't tried anything to remove it yet. I'm a reasonably accomplished player, but very ignorant regarding cue construction. My thinking is to try and get it out and if i fail get the insert replaced. its a standard schon insert for their steel joint cues, this particular one is an stl-16.

can the insert be removed and replaced? is this very costly? do i need to send it to schon or can other cue makers/repair do this?

any ideas/similar experiences for attempting to ge the material out? I'm thinking of using the tool that is used for stripped screws to bite into it and try and turn it out. if its just a broken off joint protector, then this wil be easy and end of problem. that would be nice:)

thanks in advance for any shared wisdom

use a small screwdriver.
Heat the blade and melt it into the black plastic piece.
Let it cool a bit then unscrew it.

If it is two tightly in there for that to work it might need to be drilled out and for that you need a decent lathe.

thank you

Thank you for the helpful replies.

Reverse drill bit was my first thought too. I'm going to try the screwdriver and the reverse drill bit if necessary. If nothing works, does anyone know about replacing the insert of shaft for a standard schon, can it be done without destroying shaft? i assume it is glued in?

thnaks,
dave

Dave, there is no reason to replace that insert.
The stuck bit of joint protector can be removed without damaging the insert.

insert

the blockage being a broken off joint protector is just my best guess. I don't know for sure what the thing in the insert is as it wasthere when i received the cue. so i'm doing some 'worst case scenario' research as for all i know maybe someone glued a joint protector in the previous owners shaft or something...just don't know. hopefully it comes right out ! :)

problem solved

problem solved and my wife once again has proven i'm an idiot. I finally got around to getting the shaft out, grabbed myself a couple small screw drivers and a heat source. I was looking at it and scratching it to see if it was plastic. My wife says "let me see that". I hand her the shaft and she asks for one of the small screwdrivers. 10 seconds later she turns the piece out. It did turn out to be a broken off joint protector which apparently wasn't in very tight anyway ! Sorry for wasting the time of those generous enough to post responses, hope at least you can appreciate the humor :)
