I have heard that the prefered material for snooker shafts is ash so why isn't ash used (much?) on billiard shafts in the US?

cuesmith said:Ash is far from being the "perfect shaft material" for any game! It's just that in the UK where snooker was dominant, ash is available and good hard maple has to be imported. Ash may be the next best thing, but they all play second fiddle to good hard maple!
just more hot air!

Is the ash generally heavier than the maple?,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Being an old snooker player, I dont thing anything plays better than a good peice of ash......just my opinioncueman said:Ash is not smooth on the suface, so even if it plays slightly better than maple it does not feel as good sliding through your fingers. Most snooker players play open hand bridge and it does not matter as much to them. By the way I stock American White Ash shaft dowels if anyone needs them for the cues they are building.
