Neil,

How many Predator made carbon composite shafts have you seen with dents? How many have you seen with warpage of .4mm? It would interesting if this is a study, or are you throwing unfounded lies out there to make yourself look intelligent.

Unless you have actually done the inspection how could you know?

I did not say that the predator shafts are warped by 0.4mm , but with 30 years of experience with composites, I can tell you that they are not 100% stable as people are led to believe. Damage to a composite is different to damage to a wood product. Even a warp of 0.4mm would not effect anyone using that shaft anyway. There is too much hype around dead straight cue shafts. I am sure that their cue shafts play just fine. But like anything else, if it is not looked after it will be damaged. The most common damage that can occur to composite cue shafts is from the abrasiveness of cue chalk if it is not removed from the shaft and the persons hands. Wood cue shafts also suffer from this as well. Neil
 
I currently have some Persimmon, Ash, Pecan, and Hackberry in the process of drying.
When it gets dried out I'd like to experiment with having some shafts made out of these woods
just to see what they would be like.

There are many ways to achieve what you want from a cue. Making a shaft out of an exotic material, or in a very elaborate costly fashion will not always guarantee that the results will be good.

In the end I think you'll find that hornbeam and maple (or maybe ash) will perform better than most other materials in a pool cue application. You could always core such a shaft with carbon (for stiffness), or balsa (for ld qualities). The traditional materials are plenty stiff for a pool cue shaft.

Lots of people think that the stiffer and denser a wood is, the better it's playing qualities. I don't always agree. By that logic, purpleheart should be a better playing wood than maple, but it just isn't, not by a long shot. Heavy, dense woods give a different feedback and aren't as springy. Shaft should have a certain minimum of "springiness" to them (IMO). This is important for delicate little spin shots etc..

I hope you get the intended result from your shaft creation, but I also hope you realize that the traditional materials are used for good reasons. You can get plenty of performance by tweaking tapers, ferrule materials and joint pins. I recently found out that I could get a lot better feel from my ld shaft by changing ferrules to a different material. I also realized that I want a conical taper and a certain tip diameter on my cues, so I'm having a shaft made to my specs. I feel confident in getting a good performance out of this combo.

I asked the original question to see what others have done to create a different shaft. Yes, I still like the std. maple, but I'm sure we are not yet at the pinicle of shaft/cue constructions. I like the Laminated shafts concept, but I dont know if having some sort of hybrid will give us any further improvements. I always suspect the glue joints for a point of failure. Anyway, thanks for your input!
