shaft problem

I have a old Joss cue, gold letter shafts. One of the shaft has a buzz in it, and I think its at the collar/insert. Actually think the insert may be getting loose. Isn't bad when the cue is screwed together, take the shaft off and bounce the tip on the table and its obvious.

Can it be fixed without tearing up the collar? Really want to keep the old collar on the shaft.

No problem..the brass insert can easily be replaced with no harm to the collar. Truthfully it could actually be the ferrule too.;)

More times than not, it is the ferrule.

Sometimes it's hard to pin down where the sound is coming from simply by listening. For example, that method almost never works when one has a loose weight bolt. The sound you here then, most times, seems to be coming from the shaft area. Go figure.

Sounds fixable to me.

The place I have found to cause the shaft buzz is in the glue just beyond the insert. To fix it I run a drill bit that is smaller than the brass threads up in there and see if there is any glue sitting in the bottom of hole that has come loose. This has been a simple fix that has stumped many. Just drill in until you hit wood and blow it out with high pressure air.

don't think it is the ferrule as the noise is much less when screwed together, or when a joint protector is on the cue. Could be wrong, but we listened to it tonight for a bit trying to pin point and sounds more like the collar.

I'll probably send it along to one of you fine folks at some point in the next month. Shaft plays very well, kinda hate to give it up *l*

Thanks for the information.

This is interesting information. Does this mean that if I have existing 5/16x14 shaft that I want to take out the insert and replace with 5/16x14 ACME insert that it's possible?

What would be typical charge for this type of work?

$40 should cover it.;)

I saw a Meucci shaft with the same problem you are describing and it was the ferrule. It would be easy to try the Cuemans suggestion first though.

Not any more he's not, I have the pins in stock and am finishing my first one with a stainless joint and acme joint screw. I sent the insert to Jazz, the only problem that may occur is it depends on how old the Predator is and what O.D. thread is on the brass insert. I only make inserts with a 7/16X14 O.D. thread. I have no use for the 7/16X20.

Thanks for the replies, and thanks to Jazz for adding some additional thoughts in the thread that were interesting
