I am in the market to buy a new shaft for my cue (3/810pin) My current shaft is original maple 12.70....I have shot with a 12.50 shaft and liked it but I have never shot with anything smaller than 12.50. I am trying to decide between a ob-2 shaft (11.75) and 314-2 shaft (12.75). I believe they are both pro taper shafts similar to mine. My question is what other info do you guys have that might help me in my decision. Also does a maple Ferrell bother anyone and what is the advantage of it? Can a 314-2 shaft be turned down to 12.50? Thanks J.T.

Yes, a 314 or a OB1 can be safely turned down to 12.5. I have a predator BK2 shaft that's turned down to 12.3 with a parobolic taper that crushes.

maple ferrule is less weight so less end mass so less deflection is the idea. ob-2 has a conical taper, not pro taper like 314-2. 314-2 i've heard can be turned down to 12.25 but don't quote me on that.

oh I dont like straight taper/conical so that makes my decision for me. conical means its goes gradually smaller to larger at the same rate/ratio right kinda like a house cue? I like my shaft pro taper stays small for several inches before enlarging. Sorry for the poor definitions but are they correct? also parabolic taper same as pro taper?

The OB-2 is a superb design. Royce should really be the one to answer your question, but in the simplest terms, it is a thin diameter shaft with a taper that gives it great stability. I get lots of English with mine, even with a medium stroke, yet I am not conscious that it is a thin diameter. There is nothing whippy about it...a function to some degree of the modified taper.

Quality costs a bit, but don't hesitate to try an OB-2. If you like a louder hit with more vibration, consider the Predator, but for me, the OB2 is the answer.
