shaft

Wow ! What a long thread

Bubsbug has done it again! He likes to stir the pot and get some conversation going. He is not even making a butt from scratch yet. I have gotten maybe a little more of a glimpse into John than many of you have. I can assure you he is ethical. He is a man of his word, and cares about the consequences of his actions. He is also making some darn nice shaft stock. He is not about only the money, that is for sure.
And yeah, he needs a spellcheck bigtime!

Flats on the shafts or butts is not a new idea invented by Neil. It has been around a long time. But I must admit that is the first time I have seen someone make the idea look like a pencil.

Yes he is making a very nice pie laminated shaft out of flat laminated wood. It plays much better than I had expected. It is not as stiff as I expected which is a good thing.

I was starting to think He just likes stirring the pot, cause no one can be that misguided all the time:p :D The problem I have is telling when He's talking hypothetical and when He really means what He says. Sometimes the 2 seem to be mixed together, and I don't always catch on too quickly:p .

I have seen the octagon done also, and for sure there have been all kinds of shapes done on shafts too, all tough I have not seen the pencil design before. On the other side I have not seen a bic either, so If no one's doing that design, I don't recon I would see that the same as a full on copy. Most ideas have come from somewhere originally, and are improved upon or mixed up all the time, the pencil design just seems like a total original to me. That's what makes It such a cool novelty though. Put more of them out there, and It looses any appeal in My eyes, cause I honestly don't believe The design would make a cue play better, but then again I have never built one.

I do have to thank bubs for posting pics though, Cause I really did enjoy seeing them. That is a very unique looking cue.

BTW I have never held hard feelings, just disbelief at times;) but bubs ya gotta ease up with the morality stirring man, My blood pressure ain't as good as It use to be, and I can't help Myself.:p :p Funny I didn't think ain't was a word, but My spell check doesn't pick that one up:confused: :D Well gotta go build Me a bic cue real quick like:eek: :D

For sure, If the question is asked by the ruling judge- "why the cue was built without permission", I don't think BIC "Because I Could" Will be a good enough answer for him.;)

The really funny thing is that to protect any "rights" one might have will often cost WAY more that the compensation due from an "infringer". It's all well and good to say "so-and-so is the inventer of that idea and you can't do it", but try to either 1) stop them, or 2) collect from them if you think they "stole" the idea. Things like this that get before a judge are typically worth a LOT more than a novelty pool cue idea, and all of the future profits it may earn.

I'm not saying it is right to copy. I'm saying that it is extremely difficult and expensive to get justice, and with so little risk the copying will continue.

Big Boys sue people or corporations with the ability to pay (and the payment MUST excede the legal bills). I'm not sure that some Big Boys will sue an individual like bubsbug unless the cue got a LOT of attention or if it sold for a very large sum of money. Now if McDermott started to sell a "BIC lighter" cue without permission, they might get sued (or they might just be ordered to stop).

Dave, trying to keep it real
