Actually, that's my first grading criteria once I've started the cues process. Choosing boards have a different set of criteria that needs to be met. Once the board's grain is "read", trim marks are made on them where the squares are acquired.

The square are then subjected to a new set of criteria that needs met and tap tone is the first test that they go through. Some will sound like a Champgna glass and some will sound like a cheap glass fruit bowl. Later on the selected batch is culled as anomalies or failure to pass a criteria is discovered.
 
I like the shafts I use to have that "pink" tone to it, like tapping champagne glasses together....even after it is built, on some shots I've heard a great shaft will on certain shots make the "pink" sound when hitting the cueball....
