Shaping tip with homemade lathe

I know this is a dumb question, but now that I've built a homemade lathe to shape my tip, anyone got any suggestions on what technique works best. I got a few old shafts to practice with so I'm ready to screw something up!

After I get the shaft spinning, of course, how do you guys with the homemade lathes hold the sandpaper/etc.? Or is there something better to use than sandpaper?

I've used several types of curved tip tools, even a Williard dime or The Ultimate Tip tool dime side. I'm careful to hold it perpendicular to the shaft, pressing lightly, letting it cut slowly. Very easy. Just take your time.

No really, just use one of those Tweeten's shapers or just sandpaper in your hand. Should work fine.
