Shaving down a new tip

So I had to get my cue retipped for the first time. It just seems like the tip is so long. Does that affect your shot at all? What advantages or disadvantages are there to cutting down the tip a bit when getting installed? What's your preference? Thanks
 
Longer tip life if left longer at beginning. I usually have installer shorten just a bit because the long-high look bugs me. Personel deal. Non-layered tip will firm-up fairly quick if cut down. Layered not as much. Gotta experiment yourself.
 
More often than not when I install tips for better players they have me shorten them immediately. It's not uncommon to take 4 layers off of a 9 layer tip before I even begin to shape it. The reason is consistency, they do not want to adjust to a longer more flexible tip (heightwise). This way their tip is always about the same height. Just like race car drivers running in their tires before a race.

Kamui Clear

I have only reshaped my Kamui Clear Black tips into a nickel shape and kept the tips full size.......and I really prefer the tips this way, at least for the Kamui Clear series of tips. I've never done that with other brand tips over the yaars and have always reduced the new tips after installation.......but with the Kamui Clear Black tips, I haven't done that and these tips play great....FYI.

Cut it in half before you install it, then you'll have 2 tips at the proper height. The Ultraskins are a perfect candidate for this.
 
I don't like full height tips...just looks way too long to me. 2/3 - 1/2 height is my preference.
 
Does that affect your shot at all?
The longer tips is softer overall than the same material in shorter length
The longer tip has more end mass and thus more deflection.

What advantages or disadvantages are there to cutting down the tip a bit when getting installed?
Advantages: tip lasts longer
Disadvantage: you have to adjust as the tip wears

What's your preference? long lasting.

All I can tell you is that when I go to a big event I don't see pros with high tips and many, perhaps the majority, have pretty low tips. Just an observation.

I myself like a pretty low tip, FWTW.

I play with UltraSkin HH's and cut mine in half before install, 2 tips for the price of one (already a steal for what they cost) and I get the perfect tip height for my preference

I also install red fiber pads under my tip... if any one cares lol
