sheldon lathe question.

I have a 13 inch Sheldon lathe. I have had it for about 35 years. For the last year or so the cross feed nut has been going and it finally has stripped out. I know there is a place that I can get a replacement, I spoke to them a few years ago. I can't find their number now. There used to be a guy on here that has the same lathe I have but I forget his name. He used to post all the time. I think he was a retired plumber and now a cue maker. He may be able to help me out.

Thanks

kj is the guy with more knowledge of the sheldons

there is a guy in chicago, john knox, worked for sheldon for many years

he still has access to parts

i'll see if i can find his info for you

I have been using an old Sheldon lathe for about 15 years now. It has a variable speed control that I have never seen pictured on any other Sheldon. When it goes out I will have to come up with another system as the company that makes the variable drive quit making them many years ago.

Once looked for the lead screw and nut for the cross slide. Found a new set.... as I remember the guy wanted about $1300.00 for the two pieces. Love my lathe but not that much. Bought a set for my Clausing for a fraction of that price.

Thanx for the plug Brent but I have more appreciation of the Sheldons than I have knowledge.
I haven't had to search for any prts. Nothing has ever broke or has worn-out yet.
If I couldn't find a cross-feed nut though, I'd be thinking about making one.
Your link to the Yahoo Group was a good move. Lots of resource there.
Apparently others here appreciate Sheldons as well. It's a great cue lathe.

i was hoping you would come visit me and help me fix something on mine

Jayhawk Machine Tool

I am not sure he can do Sheldon Lathes, but his card doesn't specify any brand as a focus. His name is Mike Neville. I purchased compound nuts from him for my Atlas on Ebay. Impeccable work, perfect fit and function. His email is jayhawkman35@hotmail.com.I hope he can help you.

I could see a road-trip in my future, something not too far out though.
I turned 68 in March and I'm told I'm approaching my 'sell-by' date.
Thing is, I don't travel well. Would have made the 'world's worst' road-player.
I've never asked Sey for a vacation; maybe I should. Lol
I'd be very pleased to help you.

I think you are right about making it. I tracked down the guy I spoke to before and remembered why I did not get it back then. They wanted $650.00 for it. Years ago I made one for an old lathe I had from delrin. I just did it because it was easy but it lasted for years.
