I'm headed for Las Vegas for the APA Nationals this summer. In the new, improved antiterrorist atmosphere, bringing my cues has all of a sudden become a problem. Shipping (Overnight because I need them to shoot up to the last minute) will run roughly $100. Carryon is no longer an option, and I'm paranoid about baggage handlers.

Does anybody have experience and/or suggestions?

you can do fedex 2nd day or fedex 3rd day to the hotel you are staying at.

i trust them with $xx,xxx worth of work.

I've traveled from Europe to US and to Asia with my cues. What I do is put my case in a box and label it as if you're going to mail it to your destination. I check it as luggage on the Airline and have yet to have a problem with it arriving with my luggage. But if it was "misplaced" or on another flight, they could ship it easily COD.

I love your posts, Larry. :)

Unfortunately, my flight is gonna be a cattle-car affair, undoubtedly full. Hell, there's going to be 50 passengers from my APA Division alone, all of us wanting to carry/ship/check our sticks. At least we're leaving a few days before the 8-ballers. Those guys will be packed like sardines - the whole plane might be pool players, from my 2001 experience.

I'm settling on shipping the sticks in a Fedex Tube. That significantly cuts costs for Overnight shipping, and I can roll up a couple soft cases into my suitcase. It's gotta be Overnight - I play 8-ball Tuesday night and we fly at 8am Thursday morning.

I would strongly advise you to take Fast Larry's advice on traveling with cues with a grain of salt.

Airline security is administrerd by the TSA, not the airlines. The airlines have absolutely no say in what is permitted to go in the cabin on commercial flights, so it doesn't matter if you are on "cattle-car" airlines or not.

The TSA does not care how many frequent flyer miles you have, or who you are, or what airline you are traveling on.

Cues are not permitted in the cabin on any commercial passenger flight in the US. You will not get through security with your cue as a carry-on. I wouldn't try to take your putter, either.

Either pack your cues in your luggage, or ship them via FEDEX or UPS. Be sure you insure them either way. The airline allowance for lost luggage will not come close to covering the cost to replace a nice cue.

Good luck in your tournament!

suggestion....put the cues in one of the soft cases, then put them in a fedex tube.
