The big Thanksgiving tournament at Shooters in Wichita kicked off yesterday with all 128 players, and 10-12 on the alternate list. The calcutta ended about 5:30, and matches got underway shortly after that.

Some good players showed up from out of town like Chuck Raulston from St. Louis, Justin Bergman, Michel Banks, Jr. (This kid is something else), and they are all playing as 11's (12 being the highest handicap). I, definitely think, that Michael Banks, Jr. (called Junior) should probably be a 12.

Several top local players are playing including Jr. Brown, Steve Rector, Mark Rogers, Tony Klima, Bob Owen, Marshal Roney, Scott Brown, Jamie Sanders, and yours truly.

There was $10-20 challenge games going on during the Calcutta, with Michael Banks, Jr holding the table the longest in the back room at Shooters. My good friend and pool buddy, Jamie Sanders, lost his first match to a 7 from Jefferson City, Mo. named Daryl Moses, and he should definetly be 1 or 2 higher in handicap, he didn't miss a ball until the 7th game, and that was an attempt for a safety. Jamie lost 7-3, but it wasn't even close, and Jamie is a very good player. Jamie is a good friend of Doc from Hutchinson from the old days, and Doc played world class speed.

I got a fairly decent draw, and won my first match. I have to play a friend at noon today, and we are even in handicap. Depending on matches today, my half of the bracket (2 64 brackets being run and I am in the top half of the first bracket), Junior Brown, a 10+, will run into Chuck Raulston, if not Mark Rogers, 10+ before then. If I keep winning, I will run into Steve Rector in the 4th round. I have not seen Justin Bergman play, and he is real young, about 17-19, but I hear he is good.

I watched Michael Banks, Jr. play a Challenge table game twice, once before the tournament, and once after, he has won 3 good tournaments lately in the last few months. He is just a kid too. Definitely a name to know though. He ran through his first match, 11-1. He shoots fast, real real good eye, super stroke, and the 1 rail kicks he did were right on, only missed one, and it was real close. I have not seen him shoot a jump shot yet, or a 2 or more kick shot (he never needs too yet). He breaks well, but not super good.

Today will produce a lot of players going to the left with the better players staying on the right. Evelyn and Danny Dysert are the tournament directors. Gene Outland, from Salina, is onhand with his lathe providing cue repair and maintenance for all the players, plus he is playing too.

I left just before Midnight last night, wanting to get some sleep before my noon match today. They had just started the $5.95 all you can eat Breakfast buffet with eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, biscuits and gravy, toast, and a few other goodies.

I will report more later. I have to look up Chuck Raulston and introduce myself as a fellow AZB and CCB member.

You will change your mind about his break before the weekend is over, and he is pretty sporty with "Hop Along" (his jump cue).

Play Well Jr.

Any updates on the tournament?

Update on the tournament ...

Well, we got down to the final 32 last night (or the money round) since it is paying 32 spots. I lost my 2nd match to a friend, and so dwelled in the left side last night. My first match last night was against Gene Outland, and 8 and cue repairman from Salina. I had to play Gene last year too, and I, once again, prevailed, but it was a hard fought match. I played 2 other matches later both of them going hill-to-hill, so I have made it to the final 32 so far.

Chuck Raulston is going strong on the winner's side, as is Michael Banks, Jr., and I think Bergman is still on the right. Steve Rector is still on the winner's side, but Jr. Brown and Mark Rogers are on the 1 loss side.
After I got done for the night, I watched a good match between Jr. Brown, a 10, and Randy Copeland, an 8. Randy is a greatly improved player, and known for having probably the hardest break in town. Jr., although not seen in Shooters except for big tournaments, looked in pretty good form, and won.

Also caught the tail end of a real good match between Tim Howland, an 8 and local player, with David Gomez, a 10, from Texas. It went hill-to-hill, and Tim missed a winning 4-9 combo, and David ran out for the win.

There was action going on all night on the Challenge table for $10-20 a game. No one particularly likes to see Michael Banks, Jr. put his quarters up, but it looked like Mark Rogers was taking in most of the money.

Marshall Roney,9, is still on the winner's side, and he will bump into Chuck Raulston, 11, after 1 or 2 matches. Marshall is a lefty and Luc Salvas type of player. Another good match kicking off at 1 today will be between Mark Rogers and David Gomez, both 10's. I like Mark in that match up, but if I win 2 more matches (will be down to 8 players then), I will have to play either Mark or David.

Michael Banks, jr. hit me up to play some $200 sets, but I was tired (I don't think I would like it anyway), so I hit the Breakfast Buffet, and went home to bed afterwards, about 1:45 am.

The Calcutta is paying 8 spots. I heard there was over 8 grand in the Calcutta, and first for Calcutta is paying $2,105, plus the first for the tournament is $2,000.

We get down to the heart of things today, Winner's side matches start at noon, 1 loss side starts at 1 pm.

Daryl (most people know him as Obie around here) has really improved in the last couple of years. He was always one of the better bar table players in mid-mo, but I saw him at MO State 9-Ball last year, which is on big tables, and he turned in a pretty good finish there as well. He and I did not meet in the tournament, but he struck me as being a capable and intelligent player. I'm sure he can be tough when he gets going.

How exactly do they determine the handicaps for this tournament?

Hey Snapshot, great commentary and the tourney seems very exciting....keep up the updates! And good luck btw.

how did the tournament end up? where did Mike Kline of Hays place? He's a fellow shooter from back home ... i watched him win his 1pm (1-loss side) match on sunday and he won so that should of bumped him to the $30 money tier. Don't know where he went after that cuase I went somewhere to play some pool myself.

Nice tournament overall. Some of the players were quite impressive. I hope to come next year and watch and or play.
