Shooting Over/Across A Template

Has anybody had any experience in shooting over/across a template? From what I have seen in tournaments if a template is used it is automatically removed from the table after the break. But does anybody ever just leave the template on the table and shoot over/across it when playing? Even if you are just practicing on your own?

If so, has anybody ever known the template to throw balls off? Or cause the CB or OB to lose it's line or spin?

I do it every day in practice, and yes, it occasionally changes the path of a slowly rolling ball. It happens very rarely and almost never makes any meaningful difference, but I would still try to remove it during a serious game.

As you said, most peoples instinct is to remove it. I leave it on when practicing, and as a result, make no real effort to remove it in a game. A referee can do it, or an opponent if they feel so inclined. There are occasions where I will move it for a particular shot, but it annoys the hell out of some people to leave it there, and it kind of tickles me.
Of course it affects rolls from time to time, it's an object on the table.

I use a small piece of paper towel about 1 1/2"x2" as a break pad for practice at home and never pick it up. I move it around at times also just to break from different spots but that's it. Just not that important in your home practicing. I also virtually never chalk my break cue tip at home, but if I miscue I will hit that glazed over spot with some chalk. More important things to worry about.

I was serious about leaving break pad landmines on the table during play.

Crazy stuff happened...one time, I had to force an angle and the ob to be pocketed was on the near edge of the break pad (head string). That damn ball went straight up and into the pocket like it was a mike massey paycheck.

0 witnesses. One holy shit

I hardly ever take mine of the table. If the shot is critical enough, I'll just move it to a different spot with my cue, still on the playing surface.

It does seem to me that sometimes if the CB/OB goes over/across the template that at times some sliding can occur. I've missed some shots because of this. Taking it off the table off the break does seem to be the best way to go.

The main problem seems to be the edges and holes. You can pop balls out of the rack area without too much force. If you need to roll the CB across the edges and holes, hit harder or do something else. Keep in mind that a firmly struck CB will go airborne and probably not even interact with the template.
