I just read Kickin' Chicken's story and it brought back a memory from the VNEA nationals in 1998.
My team from Montana decided to practice offsite on 9-footers. We found a little room that had a table shimmed for the bigshots. We didn't go near it, but enjoyed watching a former female pro practice on it.
When she packed it up, our attention turned to a guy at the bar that we called the Texan. He matched up with a slick fellow we decided to call Vinnie. They played for $100 per rack wtih the stipulation that Vinnie shoot with one hand. I think it was all show, as Vinnie played as well as I had ever seen. I couldn't believe the shots he made, especially from the center of the table. I swear he cut a ball in dead center that most of us would miss with two hands.
It seemed that it was just for fun and show until Vinnie picked up a little fan club. There were 3 or 4 Latin ladies at the rail cheering him. That riled the Texan just a bit. After one great shot by Vinnie and subsequent cheers, the Texan barked, "You won't like him so much after you find out he's gay!"
Well, Vinnie won 2 of 3 and they parted ways. I've always wondered who we saw that day.
