shot 65 of the 99 criticals.

i've been working my way through the 99 critical shots and came across 65 and had a question... while i am hitting this shot as told to, with enough draw to take me to the oposite head rail, i am still getting little to no action out of the intended ball. at best i hang it in the jaw, and make it 1 out of 5.

i have tried it from different angles and distances, and unless its right in the pocket with enough room for the dead ball to clear i cant seem to make it....

also as shot 61 talks about, can somebody please explain to me the difference between a push shot foul, and a push stroke? is the rule it refers to still in effect, or has it since changed?

thanks for your help.

I *believe* the rule is no longer valid(he also talks about getting BIH in the kitchen...).

However, the second diagram of shot 61 is makable even with the cueball out(even though the diagram shows it frozen)... I couldnt make diagram 1 of shot 61 though without the cue being frozen.

I have actually come across both this shot and shot 63 in a game(hit knocks 2 balls out of way and follow takes cue ball through them and pockets ball)... the second form of shot 61 is actually pretty useful as you dont have to be fozen to make it...

i imagine that you just have super clean balls, since shot 65 is basically using gear action to put follow on the OB...it worked using my school's horribly dirty balls, but all the throw shots were amplified. perhaps you can just buy a used set of dirty balls to use for shots like these? lol....

I honestly think that having dirty balls is more of a blessing as long as they are about evenly dirty, because it opens up a bit more abilities via throw and whatnot that with clean balls you dont get... of course you need to compensate on many cut shots too and banks especially, but at long as you compensate its great imho.

I do have an idea, that by mini-jumping the cue to hit the OB a little above center(but not over 45 degrees to proppell the CB forward), would induce more follow... Anyone have any thoughts on this??? it would seem that by jumping it a bit you'd be getting not only SIT but CIT too... though I havent had time to test it out....

shot 68 also hinges on this(inducing follow via draw)....

I found that the diagramed shot did not work for me. I made my own diagram with notes...

Well I can't get my diagram to show up. Anyway in the book, the two clustered balls are pointing at about 3 1/3 diamonds on the long rail. Move the cluster so it is pointing at 1 2/3 diamonds (2nd ball is closer to short rail). And line the cue ball up in the same line.

Then hit with hard draw and aim slightly to the left. The first ball in the cluster will go in the corner pocket. (Ball touching rail is hit out of the way.)

Wei...

Shoot with hard draw slightly to the left at the 3 ball. This will knock the 1 ball out of the way and the 3 will go into the corner pocket. Note the slightly different angle from the diagram showed in the book. I could not get the angle in the book to work, but this less severe angle works for me.

i'd practice it closer to the pocket until you get the feel right, but i also agree that your equipment may limit what you can do here.

Shot 61 will work with a *very* soft push.

Yes a push stroke is a foul. Other's here can probably describe the difference better than me, but I would say a push shot foul is when the tip of your cue remains in contact with the cue ball for a much longer period than with a "normal stroke". i.e. you are guiding the cue ball by slowly pushing it the direction you want it to go.

And since the above shot requires a *very* soft (and slow) push, I would assume it would be a foul?

thanks for the help... i'll try the shot tonight on some better equipment and see what happens.

about the beard... i lost my net for a few days, was out of town for easter with the family for a few(havnt seen them in a few months) and then got bogged with a project that decided my grade in one of my classes... i pm'd the beard and apoligized, i realize it looked bad on my part, but i assure you it was completely incidental, i have had nothing but praise for Freddy since the lesson. i look forward to resuming lessons from Freddy as soon as his health from surgery allows him to. hope that clears a few things up.

on good equipment... how far down the head rail can i expect shot 61 to work, and how much angle? in ideal yet realistic circumstance (ie good equipment, but not pro level play)
