I am looking to buy a breaking cue, but i have a butt that i don't use so should I buy just a shaft or a new cue? Will it make a difference during my breaking if it is the original butt or another butt? Is it the shaft or the cue that maters?

I think that I paid $60 for a J&J jump/break. From what I've seen, even the most basic shafts run that.

Darned good question. No doubt the shaft, ferrule and tip are most important, but what factor the butt plays??? Outside of the joint of course.

The butt can be big.

Are we talking about cues anymore? lmao

You are right I think, players' butts are bigger than breakers' butts, right? Mine is. Butt, does that affect the break and help the OP make a decision?

Stiff shaft, hard ferrule and hard tip is all that is required to impart maximum energy from cue to ball

If you hit off center then deflection comes in to play

If the choice is between a high quality shaft/tip and a low/medium quality entire cue, I'd say go for the shaft. The butt just needs to feel good in your hand - after that it's all shaft/tip.

I don't feel the butt of the break cue is overly important - other than what it adds in terms of weight. In order to avoid dragging this thread off topic I'll simply say, whatever weight cue you prefer breaking with is what you will want this stray butt and new shaft to be at.

I think if it is a "designer" break cue then you have to buy the whole cue to receive maximum results.

For example, I have a Gulyassy(sp?) orange crusher. My friend broke with it and really liked it. He then put the orange crusher shaft on his Fury j/b butt and broke with it. There was a great difference between the two; the ball spread and vibration from the cue.

Same thing when I take my bk2 shaft and put it on a predator sneaky pete butt. It does not break the same and feels (for lack of a better word) ugly.

Well...it's too bad you live in Canada. Cost at least $20 to ship just a shaft.

This would be a good deal except shipping would cost too much.

there you go. All decided...either buy just the shaft or the whole cue.
:scratchhead::banghead::thud:

There can be a difference, but not necessarily so.

But you do need something to hang onto.

I put a Samsara tip on any shaft and I'm good to go. I don't mind breaking with a whippy shaft, you figure it out over time.

Hi guys !

Sorry for offtopic, but I bought some time ago a jump-break J&J cue stick model 2729L, it breaks and jumps very nicely but I didn't want to talk about it...:oink: haha...

I wanted to ask you, if you know what kind of joint I may have there ? Because on website of J&J is just written: "3 pieces Jump/Break Cue with two quick release Joints,..." But what is that, because it is defenetly not uni-loc.

Could anyone help me with it ? ... Cause I'm not best with recognizing joints.

I wanted to ask for it like I year ago, but I forgotten :duck:
