I was curious if anyone else gets pain in their shoulder while playing pool? Its not my stroking arm shoulder, but my bridge hand shoulder.?

Yeah, my rotor cuff? is shot. It is hard to raise my arm above my head. Playing bothers it, but not too much. ;) I don't know if it is pool related, but I have always suspected that it is.

When i first started pool, my non shooting shoulder killed me. After a while, it dissipated. I have since met others with this affliction.

Apparently the position of your arm while bridging can concentrate the pressure in the shoulder area which is less able to handle it than say the elbow. JMHO

i used to have this kind of pain. after a few hours of playing it would get so bad i couldn't hold the steering wheel with my left hand while driving.

it has since gone away, and i believe it is because of my fundamentals changing for the better.

play around with your stance, and your fundamentals........see if that helps.

thanks

Your body might be over your shoulder too much, a la Mike Davis. If that is the case, try holding the cue farther away from your body and building your stance around it. This has the added benefit of giving you more room to stroke also.

Have you heard of something called....s-u-r-g-e-r-y? It REALLY works for that problem. Honest injun.....

i dont have shoulder pain, but i do get the "Stiff" muscle in my neck, or shoulder blade area. the one that runs down your neck into the shoulder area, i am sure you posters know what i mean. when this happens, its hard to concentrate on a shot. funny, seems like it stiffens up on a regular basis anymore, oh well.

Yup... after about 3 or 4 hours playing my bridge shoulder get sore and starts to hurt. I shoot very outstrethced though w/ my bridge arm at full extention so it my not be a very natural position for my shoulder to be in.

I quit pool for a month so that my shoulder would heal up. Went back to playing and have not had much of a problem, even after 5 hour sessions. I would avoid surgery at all costs. Something that might help is to get a tennis ball, put it in a long athletic sock, and work you're back/shoulder muscles with it agains the floor or wall. This effectively acts as a massage by working the trigger points.

hope this helps.

Regards,

Doug

I used to practice for so many hours at a time that my left shoulder would really hurt just like you described. I don't know what I did to stop it though. I think your body eventually gets used to it, unless you're really putting too much strain on that area. In that case, as someone else mentioned, you might want to try putting less weight on your bridge hand.

I've heard that before, but I'm allergic to sharp knives, they make me break out in blood. ;) Your not a surgeon are you? I'd hate to cut up on the quacks, then find out you are one. ;) By the way, if anyone here is a surgeon, I have a Schön, that I would trade for a shoulder job. :D

Well lets see. i have had an acromiaplasty with a distal clavicle resectioning on both shoulders. both are better now than before. now my Dr. has informed me (after another MRI) that my right shoulder needs surgery for a torn rotator cuff. lets see, i take lortab 10mg two at a time 5 times a day along with 10mg of flexaril and i still cannot play for more than 15 minutes at a time. what to do. surgery of just bear the pain.......mike

btw: i am left handed so it is the arm/shoulder that i use to extend when i play......

I have the same rotator cuff pain when I play for long sessions too. If you know you're going to be playing awhile try and take 600mg of Ibuprofin (Advil) ahead of time.. that should make you comfortable in crunch time. You could also try and marry a shoulder surgeon that owns a pool hall and builds custom cues as a hobby.

Thanks for all your thoughts and comments... I'll try the Advil out for sure. I'm usually good for about an hour, then it starts to hurt.

.....YO JIGS.......a little warning from experience

Just wanted to let you be warned about taking advil, aleve or any other medication that contains NOPROSYN,,NAPROXIN.. i have no idea how old you are or your medical condition. but i do know that if you have or have had any ulcers, these medications, after long term use can cause current or older ulcers to BLEED. I was on the medication Naprosyn by it self for a long while and it caused an older healed ulcer to start bleeding and it caused an upper gastrointestinal hemmorage. I was in the hospital for a week getting it to stop. And now my Doctor warns me all the time to stay away from them. If you look closely on the back of a bottle of Aleve it states NAPROXEN SODIUM may cause STOMACH BLEEDING!!!!! Sorry for being so graphic but i just felt the need to warn you and anybody else taking these meds for an extended period.......mike
