Side Pocket Folds

Saw a table the other day where instead of fold on end of cushion facing, side pocket, it was on underside of cushion looked strange but O.K. Pros and cons?

I have seen this too!!! I swear that the side pockets play a bit better and take balls easier from extreme angles. I have talked about this with people I play with. First time i have seen any one mention it on here. RKC can you chime in with an expert opinion???

I've seen it before as well, but don't care for the look, as far as being able to pocket balls better, that depends on the pocket angles/facing material, and table, not the fold in the side pocket. Usually this kind of pocket work is performed by someone that can't staple the pockets with the normal fold in the first place;)

I had my home table folded this way for years. When I first started doing tables I folded my side pockets this way because it put the folded cloth under the rail where it never comes into play. It also makes the open end of the fold face side ways to the table instead of facing the center of the table. Hope that makes sense. You just have to be careful the corner of the side pocket cloth does not stick out and keep you from running balls down the rail.
Benefits of the traditional way is the extra cloth folded might soften the area wher the ball hits and might make the cloth last longer. It also looks a little better although with the fold on the inside of the pocket.
I now fold them the traditional way. I changed since everyone else did it the other way I thought they know something I don't and just changed.
I am no expert but think either way is fine if done my someone that knows how to do it.

I agree with RKC I would not expect the cloth fold to make any difference in pocketing a ball. Next time I recover my table I might just go the non traditional route. I actually find the nontraditonal a little more difficult that the traditional way. That may be just because I have not folded them that way in a while.

Before Simonis, side pockets were folded then cut, I still like doing it that way sometimes.

Also flipping the fold to the inside rail will cause too much cloth under the rail and rasing the rail height. . You also risk distorting the cushion on the inside of the facing.

I agree with Glen, usually this is from someone who doesn't know.

Thanks for the input guys, didn't think about this raising cushion height, thought someone was trying to get a no fold look on the sides. It was a Diamond bar-box.
