Side Pockets

ok, not sure how to word this question, but here goes.

seems like balls dont want to go in the side pockets on my Gold Crown IV when they come in at an angle, and hit the cushion kinda "flush" - hope that explains it.

the cloth has that little "Ridge" about halfway up the cushion and i am wondering if possibly that could be causing balls to pop out? i have hit some shots into the side pockets that i swear there is no reason for them not to have fallen and yet many just pop out.

i noticed on the break last night several times balls hit the side pockets flush and just pop out at what appeared to be an angle they should have fell.

thoughts posters?
does everyone understand what i am meaning?

Orner Billiards from Indy are the ones that did the table setup, and the cloth.

Are your pockets shimmed? if they are like the gold crown that i play on there is an indent by the shim which sometimes causes balls to be thrown out of the pocket. But then again i play on a double shimmed pocket table and you have to hit the OB perfectly.

nope, pockets are not shimmed at all.

there are even times when i shot the OB into the side pocket, i know its going in, start to look at the next ball, and lo and behold, i look up and the ball didnt fall in.

Tom (Dr. Cue) looked at the side pockets when he was down over the holidays. he said they looked ok to him, perhaps its just my perception.

Your description sounds like the side pockets may have been folded wrong. I assume that the problem does not happen on slow rollers -- only for faster shots.

You should be able to make a shot from the spot into the side at maximum speed. On some GCs, you can do the same from about the middle of the end rail if you hit the shot perfectly. I'd suggest you try this on your table and then on a different table.

Is the drop/shelf on the side pockets back farther than usual?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Your pockets are single shimmed...as a shim is nothing more than a rubber pocket facing. All tables require a minimum of 1 pocket facing on each side of the pocket, thus a double shimmed table has an additional facing glued on top of the single facing .. and so on.
Take a picture of you side pockets and post.. maybe someone can determine the problem then...

well, now, thats an excellent idea, taking the pic!

i'll have to work on that, i dont have a digital camera, and just spent hundreds of $$$ on a new Joss Cue and having Mr. Ted Harris lighten up the Nova Cue.

the problem does seem to happen on slower shots also, not turtle speed, but slower than medium so to speak. i'll shoot the spot shot into the side tonight when i get home.

i dont think the drop/shelf is deeper than normal, but thats a possibility. perhaps this could be causing the balls to roll across the pocket, into the other cushion, instead of being thrown into the pocket.

It is tough to pot to middle bags from a significantly tight angle, tougher than corner ones. They tend to have a much narrower margin for error.
And if the ball travels over the point where the table bed just begins to curve, its speed can comfortably be enough to keep it from dropping.
Maybe you're underestimating the difficulty of the shots.
