Sighting problem

Hello,

My vision isn't that great, but it's not terrible either. I seem to have a lot of trouble focusing on where I need to aim on longer shots, mostly once I get over 5-6 feet away from the object ball. Before I start making an appointment with the optometrist, I figured I'd get some opinions here and see if this might just be a problem with my form and how I'm actually lining up on the ball. I'm generally lining up with my chin right on top of the cue.

Thanks,
Matt

The same thing happens to me man. I think my eyes are going bad. One thing that I've been using to make those shots where there is a lot of green separating the cue and obj, is I spot my shot while standing and if need be, I find a reference point on the ball and table to help me find my angle. Because sometimes my eyes will lose focus when I bend low to sight my shot and the ball is all the way across the table. It works okay, but I think if it persists I should get some eye correction, and maybe you should too. It's more reliable than guessing.

Hold your finger out at arms length and line it up with a line on the wall.

Close your left eye, open it, close it again, open it.

Close your right eye, open it, close it again, open it.

If you close an eye and your finger appears to move, then that eye is your "dominant" eye.

Might help if you place your dominant eye over your cue stick.

Example: I am right eye dominant meaning that I align things with my right eye and I can see shots best if my right eye is over the cue. I am also right handed.

If I shoot left handed, I will not see the shots properly because my left eye is over my stick. If I move my head over so my right eye is over the stick, then I aim a whole lot better.

I've suggested this before. Practice straight shots with a patch over your non-dominant eye. That should help with alignment. I agree that, unless your head is cocked some how, your chin should be to one side of the cue or the other. What I do is envision the path the ob is going to take by making an imaginary line from the bottom of the ob to the heart of the target. Then I aim the cb at the contact point that will send the ob along that line. I would also suggest using center ball until you are proficient at these shots. No sense complicating the issue with deflection, curving, and throw. :)

what i would try first is perhaps not getting so low as your chin is more or less touching the cue. come a bit higher so you can see the angle better subconsciously. when u are really low sometimes it's easy to get bogged down trying to stare at an exact contact point. and that's hard to do consciously, and also most of the time there wont be a mark on the ball on the exact contact point.

Thanks for the input everybody. I'm left-eye dominant, right handed, so hopefully I won't feel too awkward lining up like that. Can't wait to get off work and give it a shot.
