Hey Guys, Could someone tell me what are the best kind of metal rinigs to use in joints, butts ect. Ive tried aluminum and even though they machine a whole lot better I cant get the shine and sparkle. Problem is the sterling rings are outrageous in price. Maybe someone could give a source for reasonably priced nickle rings. If I buy form Atlas I need to take out a loan. Is it possible to cut them yourself or is that not worth it. Thanks a bunch for any info or opinions.

I use aluminum rings and have used sterling, nickel silver and brass as well. They all get dull with sanding. What I found works for me is to slightly undercut my my metal rings with a 60` "V" cutter so that when I sand, they stay shiny. You'll have to play around with the depth and how you sand til you get the hang of it, but with patience you'll find this helps.

I slightly under cut the rings (with a rounded tool) & then after sanding, I mask off the metal rings & resand the rings with the edge of folded 600 sandpaper. They have a nice shine...JER

Thanks guys for the sanding info. I have experienced the rings comming out a bit higher after sanding and in the Chris Hightower book, I think I read something about the rings being slightly higher after the finish if you dont sand them down a bit. The nickle sounds like a good idea but I think its to small in diameter. Any other sources would be appreciated. I need a bunch. Thanks Mark
