Silver ring question

I used nickel silver rings for a time an thought it changed the sound of the cue slightly. I switched to sterling silver rings and the tone switched back to almost normal level. But neither seemed to change the way the cue played noticably. Then I switched to sterling silver stitch rings with no silver washer style rings and the sound was back totally normal just like phenolic and wood rings.
