Here's what they had to say about the 4-pocket tables (edited slightly for clarity):

Mr. Kearney worked on this D. Harris snooker table in the 1980s. It was 8' x 4' and only has corner pockets! Quite how anyone plays any form of Billiards on this table is something of an enigma. Peter Ainsworth, a notable snooker historian had researched this question in the past. In his research, he became aware of some American 4-pocket billiard tables being produced. He noted that some of the American snooker tables were made in the period from 1863 to 1869, at a size of 6' x 12' with only four pockets, followed by some made from 1869 to 1873 at sizes of 5 ½' x 11', again with only 4 side pockets. Then from about 1873, full carom tables (without any pockets) were being made at 5' x 10'. So from this, Peter Ainsworth feels that the 4-pocket D. Harris snooker tables must be pre-1873 when the fashion for 4 pocket tables died out in America.

I have to say, for me, no side pockets would be a benefit. Not because I think that I can play better than others without them but because I scratch so F'n much into those god dammed hell holes of cueball sucking energy! Even on Diamond tables, I find just the right 1/2 mm on the end rail to hit so they go in on seemingly impossible angles. So get rid of the side pockets, please. Or at least make scratches in them not count LOL.

Get rid of all the pockets and put a 4'' hole in the middle of the table, brings a new meaning to pocket speed.
For one pocket put a hole on each spot and call it two holes.
We can open this up for discussion at the next Matchroom meeting, make it colorful, I can see
Emilys nose opening now.

Emily will next make the felt pink with the rails being LGBTQ pride rainbow pattern. It wont be inclusive enough to refer to the balls as balls as that would be gender discrimination. Henceforth they will be referred to as spheres

Wouldn’t that be discriminatory towards all the other geometric shapes?

What if some spheres identify as tetrahedrons?

I do so love when someone doesn't just let us think they are stupid, they open their mouths to prove us right

try just 2 pockets for onepocket......😂;)

Note that the balls are racked at the other end of the table from the pockets. There is a game specifically played on these tables but I forget what it is called. These tables are named after that game. I saw one awhile back, must have been a few whiles, I don't remember where!

I saw a huge table too, maybe 10x20 or 12x24. It had an inner and outer set of four legs and best I recall eight pockets, four on each side! Tried to talk the tour guide into letting me hit a ball or two on it but the spoilsport wouldn't. Something about not an enhancement to job security. Hell this is a college student working a summer gig. What is a few more weeks to lay in the sun? I wanted to see the monster table again but when I was traveling a lot I often visited old homes and museums. I think I saw it in an old home but that still leaves dozens of possibilities.

there is a carom game that is played on a snooker table, english billiards (when brits/australians refer to billiards is usually what they mean, walter lindrum was a champion etc.). it was invented and played before snooker i think, so having 4 pockets makes sense. aside from carom points, some points are gotten using the pockets, carom scratches etc.
