They come thicker than 13 mm..prolly around 13.5 (?)

Anyone tried reducing those fat J&J jump break shafts? If so how did it affect play?

Those things are so fat but they serve their purpose extremely well and at a very affordable price. I was wondering if reducing the shaft to around 13 mm would affect the way it jumps and breaks. Or should it just be left as is?

I just think of making it a bit comfortable to use..but I guess the thicker shaft is not THAT big of a deal

The one I had was 14mm but it wasn't the thickness that bothered me so much as the fact it was very sticky. I took it over to Dale Perry's shop and had him turn it down to 13mm and it worked much better.

I returned a Sniper J/B

for the same reason. The big fat shaft and the strong taper made it too tough to make a good stroke with. Action makes a JB with a 13 mm shaft and pro taper, and so does lucasi and Poison. I'm debating whether to spend the extra 120 dollars right now. I think I probably will pony up and do it (probably the Poison), but something is to be said for getting 99% of the performance for 50-75 bucks.

I own a J&J J/B model 4410. I own 2 shafts for the cue the one that came with it that I had a g-10 ferrule/tip combo on and another spare shaft I put a Samsara tip on.

I was at the local hall tonight and I was practicing 9 ball break with my J&J with the Samsara tipper shaft for about 1/2 hour. I break with the cue ball about 2 inches from the rail using a rail bridge. I was getting a ton of good breaks, a lot of the time I was dropping 1-2 balls and at least 5 times I dropped 3 balls on the break. I did drop the 9-bal twice but in the near corner pocket which is probably the easiest place to drop the 9-ball so no big deal.

(getting to the point) The guy next to me had a Predator BK2, I never have broke with a "quality" or "top rated" break cue. So I get to talking with him and finally ask if he minded if I break a few racks with his BK2 so I could compare it. I broke 10 racks with the BK2 same way I do with my J&J, out of the 10 breaks I drop 2 balls only 1 time and 3 times I dropped 1 ball and the rest I dropped nothing. The BK2 is a very nice break cue don't get me wrong it has a great feel and does hit hard, but it didn't impress me enough that I felt the need to drop $300+ to replace my J&J which is breaking very very well for me right now.

Most do...

those are the one I found that have a pro tapered shaft. I hate standard or strong tapered shafts that are 14mm tips. Feels like a broom stick where my bridge goes

wow. i still wonder how J&J can make their J/B so cheap when it works just as well as something double its price. But yea if I can just tweak the thickness down a bit

I have a 1st generation J&J 4414 Jump Break cue, have had it for over 10 years. I have two shafts with it, one ivorine and triangle tip 12.3mm and the other aegis and triangle tip 12.5mm. Breaks very solid with either shaft. I usually like to break 1 diamond from the right and 1 diamond up with a rail bridge also. I get a very good spread and drop normally 1-2 balls on the break. I honestly haven't really used a lot of break cues, this has been the first and only one that I have ever had. I have tried my friend's 2nd generation J&J 4410 with an aegis ferrule and G10 tip, can't control the cue ball, but I shatter the break. I could only imagine putting little smilie faces on the cue balls, a bit sad about that. I think that one was a 13mm shaft.

Its a great jump break cue for the money. I even bought one for my dad, my sister, and one of my close friends!
