Yes, I know I can email George on this, but i was hoping for quicker answer from this knowledgeable community. Do you know right off hand what size steel joint Skip Weston uses on his steel joint cues, and is this joint size identical to a Schon?

Thanks,
Matt

Joe,
You might as well have typed that in Russian LOL. That is Greek (or Russian) to me. Is that what Schon uses? Yes or No...LOL. I'm just wondering if I can buy a pre-made Predator to fit the cue without having it "fit". I did that with my Scruggs "way back when" and it worked fine.
Thanks though!

He was giving you the diameter at the joint in inches. Skip uses the standard 5/16x14 pin for piloted cues, which I believe is what Schon uses, and 3/8x10 for flat faced cues. If the joint is piloted the 5/16x14 predator should work fine.

Thank you sir. You're a gentleman and a scholar. I don't care what Skip said about you. (JUST KIDDING!)

I wouldn't be surprised if he said I was the biggest pain in the ass he's ever had to deal with...lol!

Neither one of you got sh!t on me when it comes to being a pain in the arse :D

P.S. Matt, what the hell are you doing putting a Predator shaft on a Skip Weston. Oh the shame...

I'm spoiled by a Predator 314. I can't go back to a regular shaft.

Do yourself a favor, and give Skip's shaft a try. Also, why didn't you just get Skip to do a Predator blank for you? I know he has done them in the past, it would have match your cue and everything?

It really isn't necessary (spending the 60 bucks for that) if a ready-made Predator will work (which worked perfectly for my Scruggs). Also, I'm sure Skip's shafts are great, but I've been using and playing good with a Predator for years now and I like what I like. This is not a passing fad for me.

I play with Skip Westons fitted with 314's as well.

Skip went through a not-uncommon evolution with Predator shafts: for my first cue, he charged me very little extra to fit predator shafts that he had in stock. The second cue, he charged me more, and started lamenting about the quality of Predator shafts going downhill, and that he had to pick through several to find ones that are perfect. I've heard this from other cuemakers as well.

This most recent cue (which I hope to have next week before I fly to Taiwan), he flatly refused to put one on unless I bring him a predator blank myself.

Another cuemaker told me that he's been having so many issues with predator cutting corners that he's dropping them altogether, saying that he can't gaurantee something he didn't make. My most recent predator shaft (fitted to my Petree sneaky pete for Taiwan) is dead straight but has a lump in the taper near the joint end. I do think, based on anecdotal experience that their quality control has been suffering for some time.

-Roger (giving this Skip a whirl with his own shafts)

I went through a similar experience with my Gilbert cue. I ordered 2 regular shafts and one predator-Z shaft (although I already had one with my Schon CX61). The custom predator shaft somehow got delayed, but I didn't want to extend the wait any longer, so I had Andy send me the cue and two regular shafts. Although the matched shafts had more deflection than the Predator-Z, my shooting actually improved (struck with more power, easier to jump the cueball, etc). So, I just stuck with the Gilbert shafts :D
