Skip Weston's Shop Tour

Knowing how big of a cue-fan I was, Joe Van of classiccues.com invited me on a tour of Skip Weston's shop yesterday. For those of you who have never seen Skip's cues, here's the link to his webpage: http://www.skipwestoncues.net (classiccues.com for more examples).

Skip was a gracious host, and it was obvious that he's very passionate about making cues. I saw his vast stash of exotic woods, from ebony/cocobolo to pink ivory and snakewood. Some of the most purplish purple heart I've ever seen, and some intricately-grained olivewood as well.

I held a dozen almost-finished forearms in my hand, and a dozen more that were cut to receive points. All I can say is, no one cuts a deeper point than Skip. The cross-section of wood at the base of the forearms are amazingly, dangerously thin. See for yourself (in the pics) how close his points are, and compare his 4 or 8 pointers to ANY other cuemaker out there, and you'll see what I mean. I wish I had the money to order all of those half-finished cues right then and there. It'll probably buy me a house in a few more years =)

The most striking aspect of Skip's work are his hardwood veneers, which he uses in place of traditional dyed sycamore. With Skip's cues, there's never any color running into each other, even near the point. I'm not quite sure exactly how his hardwood veneers are glued on (he had to keep some secrets!), but they are assembled onto the main point and glued into the short-splice grooves as one unit.

The overall effect looks similar to re-milled points, but even tighter. Skip's technique is absolutely unique---no one is doing what he's doing in terms of pointwork, and I would venture to say that no one can. He's making virtually perfect points, points that you can take a magnifying lense to.

Skip was nice enough to trim a tip for me, and it was pretty cool to watch him in action. He took the pain to calibrate his adjustable chuck so that my shaft (which has a slight warp) spins true.

In any case, the trip was an amazing experience for me. I kept saying "wow," and "awesome," the whole time I was there. I thank Joe Van for introducing me to Skip, and Skip for letting me into his shop.

Which ferrules are those?

His point work is out of this world.

You are one lucky guy

I AM!

You wanna know how lucky I am? I won the Skip they raffled off at Crown last night!

I should've bought the lottery ticket, lol!

Bastard! lol
Congrats Bud. Are you sure you don't have that Lotto ticket that won the 230 mil or so in Virginia?.
Skip just received a few of Z's ferrules. I think I'm gonna go to Skip's shop, take a gun with me and demand of him to show me how he does those so purdy points.
A player here has a fancy Skip W cue. It looked Peterseneque.

If I won that sucker, I would buy every Skip, Mottey, Capone, Dayton, Harris cue on the market right now, and every cue they'll ever make in the future.

Then I'd sit in my mansion, laughing evily as I clutch all my custom cues to my bosom.

God help us if one of the rappers you see on MTV cribs start collecting cues instead of rims.

Roger,

Glad to hear your trip to Skip's went well. He's a great guy, interesting character, and a super cuemaker! That's why we've been dealing his cues the past 2-3 years. His hardwood veneer/point work, inlay workmanship, wraps (leather and lizard), and finish are really off the charts.....way up there compared to most cuemakers who have been in it for the relatively short time he has.

We still have several of his cues in stock. For those interested in seeing some more examples of Skip's work, feel free to check out some of the listings we have on our site.

The last two cues we received from Skip are a Bushka homage style 4-point, 5-veneer cue and a 6-point pink ivory into ebony. These two cues really showcase the kind of work Skip is doing these days.

Best regards,

Hi Sean,

The six-pointer on your site is beautiful!

I saw one yet-to-be-completed cue at Skip's shop: 6 ebony points on ebony, with bright red bloodwood veneers. That cue will look sick when it's done.

Where are you located? Are you in Jersey as well?

-Roger

Roger, no I'm in Chattanooga, TN. However, we are always up at the Hopkins show next month if you'll be there....Murphey Cues booth. Maybe we'll see you there. Sean

Hey deadstroke32,

You can still find Skip at the same room,(Crown Billiards - Pompton Lakes, NJ) although, Carmen no longer owns the room, he sold the business about a year ago, he still stops in though.
