slate lip inside pocket

What if you can't use staples
Make sure you file off any sharp edges in the pockets, and on the underside, and you won't cut any cloth with the balls. But if you want to add some padding, glue in an extra strip of cloth half way down the pocket cut, and wrap it under the slate, then finish the pocket as normal.
American Shuffle Board use to put rubber strips glued into the pockets on their bar tables, I've seen this idea before, waste of time on my part.

What if the rubber is ribbed? Do you think the cloth still glues up better on bare slate?
