ok I always thought that the slates that had pins would line up perfect, but this one doesn't, and you cant shim or you will be putting presure on the slate and might crack it. so do you float the middle slate and then bring the ends together and shim then up to match.
thanks gary

Pinned or not, shim both sides of the seams at the same time, there's enough room to shim one side first, then the other. Just don't shim a lot on one side more than the other.

with the pins in the slate would not level out and you cant shim one because you are moving both slates with the pins in. so i cut them off and then i was able to shim up the slate to level and wax the seam. no problems now.

i understand that u have fixed the issue u had..great job..

at one time they went together....why not now? I am sure the slate was matched...when table was taken apart there is a possibility the pins was bent....some people don't know there's pins in the older tables and lift up on slate when removing sections and either tweak the pins or bust out a section of slate at the seam..ouch..

p.s i thought all mechanics used the method i use to apply wax, until i heard about guys using a torch...I use a iron when i use wax, the little tinny irons used in hotel rooms are great... i will post more on that later..

yes Im sure that the table did at one time fit together perfect maybe when it was new. the pins were'nt bent but you could tell someone had worked on them, never thought about using a iron to put n the wax always used a torch. thanks

i will take a pic or two n post later tonight when i get time..iron works great!

i couldn't imagine using a torch for wax..the first time i seen someone use a torch for wax i thought they was crazy>..i thought everyone used the iron....it checks out that not to many know about the iron....

Many times I have just pulled them out. I hate pinned slates. A bad idea from the very first time it was done, in my opinion. The main thing is keep both slates moving gradually and at the same time or it's BAD news.
