I don't disbelieve that Antonio Meucci was working on a telephone device as well but I hardly think that it was a just a question of being beaten to the patent office.
And, the telephone, where there was none, as opposed to a slight change in construction of a pool cue which does not affect performance is just a bit of a stretch for comparison's sake.
