He uses a laser to "draw" the design on the case and the stamping is done with a backgrounding tool called a bargrounder. Its primarily used in Sheridan style floral tooling, but it can of course be used for designs as such. Its normal use is to create depth in a carving to make the flowers or what have you stand out. Heres a wallet I make using bargrounders to create some dimension. Notice the look of depth in the carving even though the leather is less than 1/16" thick.
