Slight Cracking Sound

There seems to be a slight cracking sound whenever I screw my cue together. It only happens when the cue has been sitting in the case for a while, like overnight, and doesn't do it again no matter how many times I unscrew and screw the cue back together after that first time. I'm thinking the cold winter weather is perhaps shrinking the wood in the joint? The most obvious answer here is probably the joint is cracked, but I don't see anything and it doesn't seem to effect play. The sound though just makes me wince every time I go play and am curious if anyone knows what's exactly wrong with it.

If it helps the cue is a P2 and the joint on the butt end is phenolic that's surrounded by stainless steel. So I don't really know what could possibly crack there. The shaft is a 314 that has the base completely surrounded by phenolic as well. Looking online though shows that even though everything is set in phenolic the underlying part is in wood. Am I looking at something that could possibly get worse overtime?
 
I would guess that the cue is pretty new???, The cracking sound is pretty normal so to speak, It is a result more from Friction rather than a Crack.
It just means you have a nice tight fit where the joint pin screws into the shaft. Over time it will loosen up a slight bit and should go away. and I believe you also hit the nail on the head with the wood having shrunk a bit over a period of rest.
 
The cue is "new" I guess. It's most likely around 10 years old and I bought it here in the for sale section. It was unplayed with though so I guess it could be considered new. Hmm....the friction makes sense as it only occurs at the very last turn when the shaft is being tightened that last bit. Hopefully it just means it's a nice tight fit. Just worried though because I keep imagining a small crack that just worsens up with all the screwing together overtime lol. Thanks for the help.
 
Hopefully it's not the epoxy on the pin cracking. I have a friend who's pin came loose. He screwed his cue together and was amazed that it wouldn't tighten down, just kept spinning. He unscrewed it and now his 3-8x10 pin looked like a 3-8x20 pin. He was backing the pin out when he tried to tighten down the cue on the last turn. Easy fix though.

hmm.....well I guess theres nothing I can do until it breaks? Hopefully it's nothing too serious as it doesn't affect the way it plays. Thanks for the heads up.
 
clean the joint

You should clean the joint, especially the threads in the butt end. Use a Q tip and alcobol. Then add a drop of oil. Uniloc jont can thread funny if anything gets in them.

After that call Predator...maybe they'll hook you up. Or let a cuemaker look at it.

Wow good tip. I'm going to try and clean it right now, but does any kind of alcohol and oil work for this? Thanks alot.

Rubbing alcohol. Any good machine oil, just a little to wet the threads.
Just clean it out good on the butt side.
The thread is only a turn and a half, so anything in there will cause problems.
If that solves it pickup some joint protectors to keep the crud out of them.
