I had admired one of these cues Leon Sly made that was sold by BamaCues in August. I told him if he was doing another similar cue in this vein I would be interested. We had several great conversations and I was very comfortable working with Mr Sly. He gave me an initial estimate on how long it would be and was very close to his estimate. He was professional and communicated with me throughout the process. I have a couple custom cues but they have been purchased second hand. This was my first purchase directly from a cuemaker.
I received the cue yesterday and upon first inspection the fit and finish of the cue is exceptional. The rings on the shaft even line up with forearm ringwork. The Bacote is highly figured and the Coco is wonderful with good graining and some nice almost inky splotches. The wood is probably my main attraction to custom cues. I know many love the Ivory but I personally get more excited by the natural beauty of exceptional woods handpicked by the cuemakers. (also I prefer spliced points and veneers)
I went to the pool hall and tested it a bit last night. I had been shooting with my Diveney sneaky the last couple months getting ready for this cue (I figured they would possibly be somewhat similar in hit and feel) The Sly gave me a bit more movement on the cue ball, I liked the feel and feedback from the cue and was shooting very well with it out of the gate. It is possibly the micarta ferrule and everest tip he installed but I am very impressed so far.
(more on how it shoots after we go back out tomorrow night)
Thanks Leon for a great player and looker. A pleasure doing business with you sir!!!
