Ok...the smoke-free idea was a dumb idea. So I figured now that we're all lighting up around here, why not have another big tournament?

Are you saying it's okay to smoke in the South now. I hope the answer is yes, pool rooms are taking a pretty big hit from what I see.

Wow (cough), what a great idea (cough, cough)! Lets get a bunch of people in a (cough) closed space and start (cough, cough) a bunch of little smoke-producing fires (cough). Then we (cough) can sit around and try to breathe in as much (cough, cough) as we can. This will definitely help bring more people (cough, cough) into the building; who could resist. After all, everyone wants their hair and clothing (cough) to smell like crap; and who wouldn't want to kiss that girl who smokes - its just like licking an ashtray (cough, cough)(though there is that oral fetish thing going for her). I'm just real glad we can (cough) smoke again - it's going to make it a lot easier for me to kick this nasty heroin habit (and I'm also looking forward to my next stroke- what fun).

P.S. - this is just in fun, I would fight for anyone's right to smoke - I hope they would fight for my right to poke a little fun at them.

Gee, I’m glad you had that P.S. down there :) . I was about to "go off" lol :D .
On a side note, if you are going to let people smoke in your poolroom, just make a smart investment into an air filtration system. I can go to my favorite poolroom (Cue 'N Spirits, Winston-Salem NC) and count a dozen people smoking, including me (in just the front section), and it's not cloudy, and "smokey" like some people would like to believe. A good air filtration system is probably the best investment a poolroom can make.

Thanks,

Jon

Jon,
I wish you were running Airport Billiards here in Indy - the smoke is unbelieveable (they have never heard of a smoke scrubber). It doesn't keep me from playing in the league there, but I have to leave my coat in the car or it will smell like smoke even after 2 dry-cleanings. We have a smoke-free room in town, it seems to be doing okay. My basement pool room is smoke-free at my wife's insistence.

P.S. - I went to school in W-S, thought it was a great town.

That was good and yes I would defend your rights as long as it's not in my house. But I would not smoke if a lady is present.

M.W.,
One of my pool buddies is a smoker (and his wife) - I go to his house periodically to play (leave my coat in the car) - I've never said a word about it. My parents were smokers, I can put up with it for short periods - especially if there's good pool involved. It's probably a good thing that the local action room is as smoky as a California forest fire - otherwise I'd be there every day (I could probably do okay financially, but the subsequent divorce expense would be terrifying). If you had ever come close to death with an asthma attack, you also would be a little leery of too much smoke.

It would be Ok if the lady was my wife. I can't get her to quit.

You are both right on the money but lets face and I'm no hypocrite it is a dirty, nasty habit. It smells and shortens our lives but so doesn't every thing else in todays society. The individual will not quit because our government thinks it's okay to eliminate our freedom of choice as far as public smoking. I nor will any one else quit until we really want to. Then and only then will the willpower come. Until then they can either put the cigerette companies out of business, make smoking illegal like the other drugs and arrest me for doing it. But when that day comes they'll just find something else to bitch about.

I couldn't agree more about the air filtration system. However, the fact of the matter is most air filtration systems don't do crap. Room owners don't turn them on to save electricity, they don't change the filters if they do turn them on, and they don't repair them if they break. I am glad to see that the places you go are an exception, but they are the exception.
I hate smoke and all it's consequences. Unfortunately I also believe in room owner's rights. I wish every pool room in the entire country would go smoke-free, but I don't think it should be legislated. Actually right now in MA there is a smoking ban, so I go to pool rooms more, before I just suffered the smokey rooms when it was unavoidable and it really did take away enourmously from my enjoyment of a night out, I just love playing pool so damn much. Obviously smokers mustn't love pool as much as non-smokers if they won't put up with a non-smoking room in order to play with their friends and support pool.
In conclusion, smoking sucks but smokers don't. Actually they literally must suck in order to smoke. It's not the sucking I mind, it's the exhaling and the cigarettes left smoldering in ashtrays generating copious amounts of smoke into the air while people contemplate their next shot.
Mike Webb, don't be mad at me buddy. :D
Steve.

Mike,
You know I don't smoke, but you might not know I quit about 35 years ago in anticipation of the increased cost after my discharge from the service (I shutter to think what you guys pay now). I found a great little book down the PX which had a great plan for quitting and it worked like a charm. If you ever decide to quit, take up running. They are totally incompatible (except for some very weird exceptions) and you'll have to quit one or the other very soon. Maybe I can get you on my soccer team, I know, I know, it's a girls sport. :D
An interesting note about the economics. You know Mr. Billiards in Framingham had a smoking and a non-smoking section. Jimmy up there told me they keep some statistics and the interesting thing was that though they got more players over the course of the day in the non-smoking section, the players in the smoking section (not all smokers btw) stayed longer and actually used more table time. Just a tid-bit for you smokers to use in your arguments.

Hi, I don't think I'm following this thing right, are you saying that a state law banning smoking has been reversed and now smoking in places like pool halls is legal again?

The way I read it, it sounds more like smoking is NOT banned in SC. He took a chance on going non-smoking in his room and it didn't work out economically.

Thanks Steve, I know alot of states are going nonsmoking & I don't think it will be long before the whole country adopts this law.

Smoke Free

I was a smoker for 40 years before I finally quit but I was still devastated by the ban on smoking instituted by the state of California. You would think as a room owner who had just quit smoking it would be to my benefit not to have people smoking around me. However I fought the smoking ban tooth and nail for months on end because I thought it would put me out of business and it almost did. Finally I had to succumb to the law as the smoking police were moving in. I stopped all smoking inside and for the next 3 months business was terrible, people started going to bars where they were still getting away with letting people smoke. Then it finally happened, the non-smokers started coming in and the smokers that loved pool and beer relegated themselves to stepping outside to smoke. Now business is better than ever with both smokers(my wife still) and none getting along fine. Now I am still against Government intervention into my business and I think it is a violation of my rights but it is survivable in a pool room in the end and really probably best in the long run for everybody.
And the poster that talked about the survey and found the smoking section sold and stayed more. That is obvious because smoking and drinking go together and those people naturally last longer. They party more as they drink more.

p.s.
I cant get my wife to quit either.

This cracked me up. The last thing my ex-girlfriend said to me was "if you play in that tournament Thursday night we are through." I picked up the phone called my buddy and said "hey I am going to need to stay at your place for a bit after the Thursday night match."

lol. A guy on my APA team was given the same ultimatum concerning Vegas. He's going to Vegas and will find out if he has a girl friend when he returns.

My best advice for your APA friend, call home while in Vegas, and if it's a no go, he can always "have a good time" while in Vegas :D .

Thanks,

Jon
