Smoke Free Room

Less than 9 race, one break per player. 9 and over,

THREE breaks in a race to 9 set? jeez. i disagree. between sets - OK. the occassional gotta-pee-back-in-a-flash is OK. but if my opponent left in the middle of a SET for 10-15 minutes, it would be called a forfeit.

How about playing the pool room owner or one of the staff who is always off doing their job. Then when they lose the blame it on their distractions like it doesn't distract you as well and you are the one paying the table time while they are off tending to some customer. Holy Gripe!

Breaks

Alot of the times in a tournament the players are allowed a break during the set when they are up. Meaning to say, in order to call a break in the action, it must be your turn at the table. This way, if you are on roll, it can't be used to break your stride. I have seen this in some tournaments, so I don't want to say all, but it is a reasonable request to take a break as long as you are at the table and you call it or your opponent is at the table and he calls it.

I think a better solution to the community smoking problem is to make cigarettes MUCH MORE deadly. Then all of us non smokers will no longer be irritated with weak minded, ignorant, self destructive fools running around with a "smoke" in their mouth. That's my solution, anyways :)

I've got a legitiment querry to smokers:

How can you stand to smell that bad all day?

When I get back from a pool hall I SMELL DISGUSTING. I mean really, really, bad. I have to take a shower and quarantine my clothes so my whole house does not smell. I'd rather walk into somebody's house that had a strong litter box oder than a smoke oder.

Anyways, I smell so bad that just about everybody I run into says something about the strong smoke smell on me. How do you all do it? Its like having really bad breath. People want to leave your smell proximity as soon as they can...

Give me a break!

Yes, Anatasia's is a top notch place and probably one of the best pool rooms I have ever been in...just because they don't allow smoking. I got news for you though, aint nobody taking a smoke break in the middle of a match against me...PERIOD. That's pathetic and blatent poor sportsmanship. A person having to go to the bathroom is one thing, but to go smoke a cigarette? Geez...I would break my cue down and quit right there.

Shorty

You got to be kidding. What difference does it make whether you take a pee break or a smoke break except your obvious prejudice against smokers. Since the advent of no smoking pool rooms and venues it is common practice to allow a 5 minute break every hour but only can be called when you are shooting. The non shooting player cannot call a break. If a break is allowed what business it it of yours what they use it for. So I hope I play you in a match and call for a break. Let me see, will you follow me to see what I am doing? Join the real world Shorty. Breaks have been allowed forever in matches. I smoked for 40 years, quit 7 years ago and I would never begrudge a smoke break to anyone or a pee break. So give me a break? Please! Would you also ban psycological breaks? Mental breaks. Relaxing breaks. Almost every sport in world has timeouts. Basketball is famous for using timeouts to stop momentum of the other team. Wake up and smell the roses. Your reply is callous and ludicrous.

Honestly. We can't smell it.
I guarantee that if we could it would make a difference as to whether we decided to continue or not.
It is a foul habit and I am now on day one of being smoke free.
I told JAM at the Joss finale that to quit I am going to start running until I puke. I haven't yet but this is the week :-)

Look dude, I been playing pool probably longer than you have had pubic hair...in a short race to 7, in the tournaments I have played...I have NEVER had someone take a break to go smoke a cigarette, or go to the bathroom that I remember. Hell that includes myself, and I got a smaller bladder than any of you people here!

Think about the context I said it in before you go firing off your fingers dude.

What context Dude? You stated if someone took a smoke break you would break down your cue. That is blatantly stupid and callous. Why don't you answer the point, why is your pee break more important than someones smoke break. What difference does it make? So if you match up in a tournament against another person that is handicapped in a race to 7 and it would take over an hour more than likely you would deny that person a smoke break. That means he can deny you a pee break too, right. Most tournaments of any consequence are more than races to 7. Let's see I am diabetic, would you deny me going an taking a shot of insulin? Makes no friggin difference what the break is for. And all tourneys allow breaks. And by the way, I have been playing pool 54 of my 65 years and I will match my experience and world knowledge of pool with you any time. Oh by the way I have owned a pool room for 30 years and have survived the no smoking laws quite easily. Maybe because I allow smoke breaks and even give credit for time away from the table. I am not as prejudice as you dip shit.

You go, Koop. The way I quit was I did it fifteen minutes at a time. When I had the urge, I said to myself that I would wait fifteen minutes. After fifteen minutes, I would then decide if I REALLY wanted a smoke or was just being habitual. If I really wanted one, I'd have it without guilt. But usually it would be a half an hour before I remembered to decide, and eventually the urges left me.

It's been 30 years, 8 months, 22 days, 17 hours and 25 minutes and 16 seconds since I quit and I don't miss it a bit. :)

Thanks Jeff.
That is exactly how I did it today and it worked.

Koop

P.S. I can tell you don't miss them at all :D

I really don't miss them anymore, (I just wanted to hear that joke again) but about 20 years ago, I used to wonder if I played pool just so I could unconsciously get a nicotine high instead of actually enjoying the pool. I've found that it's really pool that I've addicted myself to, not cigarettes. Shit, I'm supposed to go play league in about 15 minutes...I let you know what I decided. :)

I think Shorty wrote what first came to mind of the "break" maybe cause of his personal experience of it. Just like you said nfty, to stop momentum. To say it is a shark move is quite obvious. Of course I believe people should take their breaks during a match however they want whether it be peeing or smoking, or insulin shots(Great for muscle growth). I also believe it is to stop your opponent from stringing racks together. Is that right table etiquette? Probably not, but like you said basketball does it and so does football. Hell I do it! I don't smoke but if I'm on the losing side of a money game, I'll call TO and go to the restroom, splash some water on my face, clean my glasses and hope I come out shooting like Jesus. Anyways, my point is some people really have to pee or smoke and some people don't, but it is a part of the game so we should all expect it while in a match. Hope I didn't ramble off too much.

You are right, however

Are you really reading the point. The "shooter only", can call a break so the opponent cannot stop you from running racks. That is the reason for the rule. Has nothing to do with table etiquette of course unless there is no rule then I agree that is not proper and should not be allowed.

I agree...Now there's the alternating break format. Oh Nelly...Another can of worms. I know this was discussed on another thread so I won't say another word.

at the pool hool i work at there is a nada on smoking when I am there. If its my friends I will let a 1 cigarette slide but only one.

Smoke break outside for 10-15 minutes vs pee break for 2-3 minutes.

Person down 4 zip in a race to 7 went outside. Came back in 15 minutes and then won the match.
