sneaky pete shaft question

I'm thinking about buying a second shaft for a true sneaky pete cue that has no collar on the butt or shaft (5/16x14 pin). Is it possible (and at what approximate expense) to take a traditional aftermarket shaft with a collar, remove the collar and have it match up well to the butt?

Tx for any input.

Depending on the diameter of your Sneaky Pete, at the joint. Rememer that the after market shaft (5/16 x 14), will have about a 1/2" wide collar. If you cut off the shaft, just behind that collar you will be cutting off 1/2 of the 1" brass bushing (you'll also loose 1/2" of length). The bushing would have to be drilled out then a wooden plug has to be glued in & then a new hole will have to be drilled & tapped before the new bushing can be installed. I'd charge $50 for that job. Also chances are that the wood color & grain of the new shaft would make it stand out like a sore thumb. The SNEAKY part of your Q would be blown...JER

Tx JER--that's what I was afraid of; appreciate the excellent post.

As Jerry pointed out it will stick out like a sore thumb either way, so you might as well just use the shaft with the collar still on it.

Shaft

You can get a "partial" from most of the aftermarket shaft companies. The "partial" part means the joint end is not tapped yet and it's a little oversized still. You could then have a cue maker match the shaft to your sneaky and you could avoid the joint ring.

I can build you a matching shaft for $80.
