I think it's a bit of everything: grip, comfort, consistent contact point on the tip. Not sure about the grain of the cue though. I have heard of flipping the cue around and using the bumper side for hard to reach shots though.
Personally, I can't stand it. Maybe someday i'll pony up and buy a proper snooker cue, then i'll get used to it.
