Snooker in New York City?

I'm from Ireland and going over to NYC in a few months for a while, and I'd like to keep playing snooker while I'm there. Could anyone recommend some clubs that have snooker tables? From what I've read it doesn't seem like there are any in Manhattan, but I'd like to explore the rest of the city anyway.

TJM,

There is a small room in downtown Manhattan that I will try to get the name and address for you. Its a bar/cafe in front and in the back there are a few well kept snooker tables. It's a nice place but smallish. Probably easier to get an empty table during the day than night.

The place I go to is in Queens which is a very short subway ride from mid-Manhattan. (10 minutes) The place is called Masters Billiards they have 2 snooker tables in good condition, excellent prices. They are not used very much but the room is big and has become a top action room in the NYC area. Wed. night there is a weekly 9 Ball Tourny with a good number of top players and not so top players that might be fun to see or play in.

In Manhattan there are also snooker tables in some of the private sports clubs but you need an invite or be a member.

Cheers!

There is ONE table in Manhattan that I know of. It's at The Billiard Cafe located on Elizabeth Street & Grand. I played on it a little and although I know little about snooker, it seemed the equipment was in fairly decent shape. They do appear to be missing a few if the usual bridges (rests) that usually accompany a snooker table but the cloth seems about right.

Outside of that, you'll have to go to Queens. Masters Billiards (lots of pool action), Carom Cafe (best choice, especially if you like 3-cushion) and Spin City all have snooker tables though I've never used them.

i don't know if manhattan has any snooker tables any more. slate (formerly chelsea billiards) had some, but i know they got rid of them. i think you have to go outside manhattan to find one

jude, vjk....what types of tables are they? the 12 foot english style or the 10 foot american ones?

All of them are 12-foot. The only 10-foot American snooker table I've ever seen is at Brownstone Billiards in Brooklyn. I didn't even consider 10-foot worth mentioning.

also worth mentioning is that if you're traveling by subway, Spin City, Master Billiards, and Carom are all along the 7 line in Queens.

There are 4 tables at the NYAC in Manhattan - but this is a private club.
Carom Cafe has 3 snooker tables - but that room is best equipped for 3-cushion (10 tables).

Thanks, guys. I'll make a note of these clubs and check them out. Master Billiards sounds pretty good, especially since I've never seen any serious pool games.

TJM,

Thought you might like this.

My wife is from a small Irish town called Fethard in County Tiparrary.
In the middle of the town is an old stone mill that has been converted into a beautiful theater. On the top floor of this theater is a large room and inside are two beautiful full size snooker tables in mint condition that are only used by 4 guys for about 3 hours on Monday nights. That is it. They sit there unused the rest of the time. Except when we go to vist. Then I have my own private snooker room all to myself.

What an amazing game.

Hi Jude,

When I'm in NYC I always go to the New York Athletic Club to play snooker in their wonderful billiard room, and I once played a few frames of snooker with Jennifer Barretta in there.

I had no idea of this other place in Manhattan to play that you mentioned above, and the only billiard room I could find info about on the internet located in Elizabeth Street in NYC is called "128 Billiards". However I will check out that location you stated when I'm next in NYC - thanks for that info!

To my knowledge, there is also a another billiard room in Brooklyn that has at least four full-sized tables that I hope to visit next time I'm there:

Platinum
225 47th Street (2nd floor)
Sunset Park
Brooklyn
NY 11270
Tel: (718) 439-7122

Best wishes.

Alan.

I played 3c at Carom Cafe over the holidays. If they take care of their snooker tables as well as they care for the 3c tables they will be in excellent playing condition. I think I saw at least 3 6X12 snooker tables. I was there all day and never saw anyone playing on them though.

What does it take to join the NYC Athletic Club? I go there often and it may be worthwhile to join.

I can't help you with your request but it looks like you got some good info.

But I did want to say welcome to the forum. I am from Dublin myself and have lived in the USA since 1993.

If you are ever in Florida, look me up.

Have fun in NYC.

I was at the New York Athletic Club about 10 years ago. It is NOT your typical gym membership. This falls into the catagory, "if you need to ask, you can't afford to join". The Billiard room is beautiful, though. If I remember correctly, it's on the 10th floor overlooking Central Park.
