So far, do you think C J Wiley is doing the best thing for the Mosconi cup and USA?

CJ did a fine job and I'm proud of him and the Team America. Our guys fought hard against a very tough Team Europe and nearly pulled off the great comeback they needed on Thursday. CJ's frontloaded lineup on day four gave us a chance, but Melling wrestled back the momentum with truly exceptional play.

CJ and his team did America proud and I commend all of them. This was a great event and all who participated provided great theater for me and all the fans who love pool.

Very good post!!!

Thank you. Why does everyone have to find someone to blame or try to blame? Can't someone just be better on a certain day or days?

Everyone one of these guys on both teams are putting their hearts into it. Sometimes even the best miss or get an unfortunate roll

There's factors here that make the pressure almost unbearable. It's not about just playing great pool, it's about facing the most challenging moments in your pool career. I can only share my experience, strength and suggestions, however, even Johnny Archer with 16 years says it's the most pressure he's ever faced. I ran out the last rack to win the CUP 16 years ago and my only thought was extending my cue through the ball. To this day I remember that game and what it took to make a "routine" run out. Let me tell everyone, there is nothing "routine" about playing pool under these conditions. With that being said I love this situation and what it stands for because win or lose you learn valuable lessons about your Game, yourself and other people. This is great for me personally because I thrive on pressure and feel an eery sense of calm in the "eye" of this "tornado".

Tonight we have nothing to lose and everything to win. I have overcome many seemly impossible positions and so has everyone on the team. We will play the rest of the tournament one ball at a time and accept the outcome as professionals and Men.

Anyone thinks they can do better under these
circumstances is "whistling in a cemetery" and has never played at this level. You can say or think what you want, and I will assure you ANYTHING can happen tonight. If you wonder if I "believe" in miracles, I have learned from experience to EXPECT THEM!

We all just need to win ONE match to be victorious and whatever happens I'm honored to be a part of this team and this chapter in pool history. It's not whether you win or lose at this point, it's literally HOW YOU PLAY THE GAME. 'The Game is the Teacher' .

Thanks for your support and respect for this team's efforts. They are required to confront the most extreme conditions and unless you truly know what it's feels like to be out there in front of this type crowd you can't imagine what it takes to win.

No matter what the outcome, these players are all winners and I will personally defend any shot, or decision they make tonight. They have a chance tonight to overcome all odds and go down in history with one of the gutsiest comebacks of all time. I will expect it.

Great post, CJ used my computer,

He did one hell of a job, on MANY levels. He was very effective as a team captain. He knows pool & winning as good as anyone who has ever picked up a cue. Each day he was more effective, had they had more time "gel" there is little doubt in my mind we would have won. Everyone on the team, did a great job.

I never seen pressure like that, ever. Except there, York Hall is brutal. It was fun, and winning would have been great. It takes years of experience to fade that pressure. IMO and thats why if you look at the ages of the European's and our players who did the best they are older. Its not a spot for young guys. Hell I been around forever and i'd fall apart like a cheap suit there, it's not for everyone.

Overall i feel like we will have a better chance next year, as Mike and Brandon got their noodle wet there, its tough no matter what. They will come back stronger and more prepared than ever. Also having the same captain year after year helps too because there is familiarity which counts for a lot. We lacked that somewhat this year and that hurt us, CJ figured it out and worked his ass off. everyone of the players could see that and listened. cant ask for more.

Hello Fatboy,
I certainly appreciate you posting in my thread for all to see exactly how hard it was at the Mosconi Cup event. First hand info is always better than second hand info. You are an asset to the AZB family, and the world famous Lock Society. They call you Fat Lock!
Many Regards,

Of course he is. I think he's an inspiration. Just look at how much more fun AZ is since he started posting. Compared to Charlie Williams, CJ is like Nelson Mandela.

LMAO-
Spidey...you made my day-even if i had to clean my desk after spitting out my first coffee, rofl ´

Great post Eric!

IN this thread here (thx god) some very knowledged guys posted very nice stuff. Me and some friends/guys really wondered how some US guys had been bashing members from the us-team from the first day on.
And the *worst coments* are sure made by players, who already shit in their pants if they play the 1st round in a local tournament in the last corner behind in a poolhall.....

HOw the team from USA came back on the last day was great. Therefore i m thanksful- This made the event even more worthful. And also the victory for europe is also more worthful, because they had to fight an amazing opponent on the final day!

And in my opinion CJ Wiley and Johnny Archer had big influence to their team so that they had been able to perform that great on the last day. For such a comeback you need big balls and MUCH self-belief.

But finally we had Chris Melling who again performed outstanding :grin-square:

@Eric: Maik and me had fun by sharing some stories about his meeting with you in Vegas :p we laughed so much. Hope to meet you next time :-)
I shoot you some greetings from him^^

i am satisfied that now some americans here are (again) proud of their team,

Great thread here, I'm sorry to have missed the match. I find the emotion aspect interesting, and I cant help but wonder if the team discussed this. Or were they told it would be good for tv? On the surface I agree with what basement said, high emotion isnt normally a part of their games. But they did well, so perhaps teams thrive on emotion better than individuals do.

When I shoot as well as anybody on the USA team, I'll have earned the right to be critical.

That ain't gonna happen...

Chris Melling was the most relaxed looking player of them all-both teams. Wow it looked like he was just playing his 2 round match of a $5 tuesday night tournemnt, loose as a goose. He seemed to handle the pressure the best. JA won all 6 matches so clearly he handled it too but he felt it, Chris didnt look like he felt anything. I still pick JA over Chris heads up.

it was a awesome experience and congrats to Chris for his MVP as well.

well said, I agree. When i'm there then I can start to knock other players until then, its out-of-line to do so.

If everyone were to adhere to that rule you might as well turn the lights out on this place.

Baloney. Many of us who watched could see an obvious difference between the performances of the players and how the Euro coach and the US coach interacted with their respective teams. Jay validated much of that with his on-scene observations posted here. And, it needs to be pointed out that, seeing as how you were figuratively in bed with the team, your observations are to be taken with a grain of salt.

Yes, I know I wasn't there -- I've just read what you and others have written and am commenting based on what I saw with my own two eyes on the ESPN stream. I also got first-hand observations from friends who were there. Don't get me wrong -- nice job CJ. But that does not put his performance, or that of any particular player, beyond the reach of critical discussion.

So how about this: tell us specifically the things you observed that CJ did that made him such a great coach, instead of vague generalities? How do you justify Dechaine's performance?

CJ took care of business. He managed the team well through the pressure cooker for four days and put them in a position to win. It was anybody's match up until the eleventh hour. Despite being behind, our guys fought back and gave it their best shot.

With Johnny Archer at quarterback, we had a solid team. CJ stepped in when he was needed and let the guys do what they do best...play pool. I would like to see him be involved next year with the team, if possible. Either coaching or playing. Thanks, CJ!

Best,
Mike
