So here is a newbie question about Dead Center mounting.

I recently bought a Porper Model B Q lathe and have been repairing a lot of cues. This is something I am comfortable with but I have never gone beyond that.

I was thinking of trimming down some shafts that came with it but the dead center that came with the lathe has a Morse taper.

I can not for the life of me get it to mount and be even. Is there something I am missing completely? Any tips appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I don't exactly know what you mean by "mount and be even". Porper made Morse taper tailstocks and other ones for straight 3/4" centers, chucks and so on. The sleeve in the tailstock (quill, that's the word!) that accepts the centers is changeable to accept either style. Also In the world somewhere there are sleeves to adapt the morse taper to a straight-bore tailstock.

But perhaps you mean that a center in the headstock will not allign with one in the tailstock. This is a common problem on Porper lathes; many tailstock castings were apparently not bored correctly. I've been meaning to bore, sleeve and re-bore mine for years, but I don't do too much between centers on this machine. Back when I did, I just accommodated it with the taper bar adjustment.

I never could get my Porper to do a first rate job on shafts. Mine is old and loose, but it still made some pretty good cues when that was all I had.
There are guys on here who know vastly more than I do about these lathes. Perhaps someone else will contribute something.

I guess you may have inadvertently answered my question so thank you. I need to figure out how to adjust the sleeve to mount it in the headstock (live center in tail stock). It is set up now for non tapered and naturally with the taper installed it is no where near center.

Yea I noticed the alignment issues. I am not even able to get a ferrule faced properly because I am not able to line up blades to the center (no idea how to move them up and down and they are normally about 1/2 mm off center).

Anyways I will either figure out how to change it or get one of the adapter sleeves you spoke of.
Thanks much!

I did not see where or how it could be but I will check it out when I get back to the shop.

See post #2 above. All will be revealed.

edit: Well I reread your post #3 and no, a morse taper dead center will not fit in the chuck (headstock). You need a non tapered one. They are very cheap.

edit #2: I still don't understand your problem I guess. What is this "sleeve" you are trying to mount on your headstock?
What most people do is just hold the dead center (just a rod with a 60* bevel cut on one end) in the chuck. I don't know another way.

If you are using the stock Porper toolpost, just shim the tool bit to the height you need.
