So just now, it occurs to me that...

Birmingham does seem to be downplaying their location in Alabama. It says Birmingham, USA. There is the state seal at the bottom of the page. I'm trying to think of similar cities in other nations. European nations have subdivisions but I don't recall them being named with the city. I think I've heard Calgary and Alberta together for events there, and Vancouver British Columbia. At least from my exposure in America, cities in other nations don't have the association with a state. Then again, most of the European nations are about the size of US States. I don't think Birmingham has the international name recognition of many other cities where people just know of it, Unlike New York City, Los Angeles, New Orleans, etc.

Supposedly a high number of foreign students were enrolling at the University of Southern Alabama at one time. Then someone finally realized the students were enrolling into USA....
