SoCal Player Danny Allen

Wondering if any of you guys know Danny Allen?

When I frequented F. Galindo's room, "Gold Ball" here in San Bernardino years ago, he was a fixture and as far as I know, probably the second best player in that room behind Francisco.

He was bald, somewhat hyper and cussed a lot when things weren't going his way, but a very nice guy. I always looked up to his game. Used to pal around with a big black man named Pete, who shot real good as well.

I checked the player profiles and there's a Dan Allen who finished in the money in many Arizona events, but I don't know if it's the same guy.

Any info is appreciated. I always wondered what became of him. Last I heard, he owned a bar called "DJs" here, but it went bust.

Danny's a fiercesome competitor, and the question was who was the better,Danny or Pete. Probably Danny. Don't know about Dan Allen in Az. Galindo sold the room some years back to Benny ,I think. Could be a decent room if they had better felt.

Yeah, it's called Benny's Billiards now and the owner has let the place go downhill quite a bit. Those tables haven't been recovered in years.

Is it the same Benny who used to play in the room a lot? Older Mexican guy, always seemed to be dressed in a suit? He could play a little as well.

Are you from the Inland Empire, Fantum?

I live a few blocks from Gold Ball, which was my favorite room. Don't really have one at the moment since I'm just starting to get back into pool after a 9 year layoff.

The two pool clubs downtown were all right. Not sure if there's any action though. I also like to play on the bar boxes at the Rustic Inn.

Pete and Danny tried to open a room about ten years ago, but ran into snags with the city. I used to play at that room 2 blocks south of the 10 fwy(can't remember the name). When it opened 20 yrs. ago it had nice Gandy big G's.

I think I remember Dan, he liked to play on bar boxes too, right? Didn't he run around with Melvin? I don't remember Melvin's last name but I remember he used to split time between Vegas and San Bernardino.

I think he likes the bar tables. I saw him a couple years ago at the Red Fox Bar playing. He was with Pete. I put my buck down and told him I remember him from Gold Ball. I was just a kid during his Gold Ball heyday, so he never really paid any attention to me in those days and didn't remember me.

He broke and came up dry. I had a nice layout, ran 4 balls and missed a hanger. I got nervous thinking about beating him :)

He quickly ran out.

He's a good player. Not sure how his present game is, but when Francisco hosted a California Gold Rush event in the 90s, Danny finished 6th in a strong field that included Ron Rosas, Tang, Francisco, and many more of the usual suspects of SoCal pool. Tang won the event.

I never met Melvin, but as far as Danny goes, he's bald, has a moustache, and an intense demeanor. Sound like the Dan you know?

If anyone in the know finds this thread, I'd like be interested in hearing more about Dan.

Danny

Danny is a friend of the family. I don't think he knows it but my intrest in the game started when I saw him play. Pete and he were trying to open a room in San Bernardino. They got pretty close to open. Had put months of time doing construction, and then got screwed by the city. The city then ended up owning the joint. Think they made it a wic office or something. It was on watermen above the 10 freeway, and they were going to call it the "Bar Box" if i remember correctly, which is funny because I believe there were plans to have bar tables but during construction they only had some 9 footers up if i remember correctly.

The Danny your reading in AZ might very well be him. He moved about two years ago I think to havasu. Last I heard thats where hes living.

I saw pete last week. He did something I never pictured him doing, and that was join an APA team out in San Bernardino. That area is just starting up, and he is by far the best player the APA has in the San Bernardino divison.

Well, i hoped that helped answer some questions.
